I’m not admitted yet but figured I would post a question anyway.
I applied for next fall as a transfer student and I have had some reservations about how life at BC would be for a transfer student.
Sort of a strange question but do you know any transfers, do you know how they are accepted as part of the campus, where they live, how easily they integrate into the student body, etc?
I know you are only a freshman but I was just curious if you have noticed or heard anything about transfer life, and of course sometimes no news is good news. Thanks

transfer,
You should have a close group of transfer roommates to begin with, but it is up to you to put yourself out there.
Suggestions; Go to the first Halftime before classes start — sign up for intramural sports — try to get involved in something, if you are a communications major, because of your college background you may be able to begin writing for the Heights within the first couple of weeks. This way you will meet others from multiple sources. Again, I strongly suggest Halftime, if you do go; you can have close friends before classes even start.

Hello I’m a new 2016er. From my research on BC it seems that the physics dept is not as good as the chem and bio dept. However that’s just what I find out on Internet and so far I haven’t really experienced how these depts are, so choose to believe it.
But here I find a link for you, it’s another thread in this forum about how the science depts are. Hope that helps.

What do students majoring in Economics or Music say about the departments? I’m considering a double major in both at BC, but I cant really tell much about the departments by looking at the websites. Also, are there many student bands or musicians in general on campus? What’s usually the biggest challenge in double majoring at BC?

thedandy1:

I’m a current bc freshman trying to double major in econ and history. Econ is a pretty popular major here at BC. If you are in A&S you receive a BA in econ, while csom recieves a BS with a concentration in econ. The intro classes are pretty big. I took Principles of Micro last semester and now I’m in Macro. Class is about 300 kids, but that many rarely ever show up. You should take stats and calc freshman year too. Classes naturally get smaller as you get more into your major with theory classes and electives.

On the double major note, I think the hardest part is getting all you general core requirements done and then on top of that trying to complete your requirements for the two other majors. It helps to have AP credits. It’s kind of something thats difficult to decide on later on because it would be really hard to fulfill all your requirements on time. I suggest you plan early if it is something you are really interested in.

Is BC worth 224k +?

I’ve asked this question on another thread, but based on #147 above I have to ask the same thing: is ANYONE receiving any sort of FA from BC or do they expect everyone to pay full fare? I know it’s a great university, but my son has other options at top universities at 1/2 the cost (and some with almost no cost) of BC and I’m still trying to discern if this brand of Jesuit is that much more worth it.

Me again.

One of my other options for next year is Northeastern University. In order to properly compare the two, I was wondering what kind of internships and/or job opportunities are available to motivated BC students who seek them out?

If I were to try and have ample job experience in my field before I left BC, could I?

@transfer200 I actually went to orientation with the new transfer class so I don’t know them personally, but I met some transfers that I see around campus by coincidence a lot. They are always with people and seem to be happy and I know this is all very stalkerish but transfers do make friends and can assimilate into the school very well.

@thedandy1 I feel like georgie33 answered your question well, econ is one of BC’s strongest and most popular majors. I’m pretty sure we even have had the same econ class two semesters in a row too…

@overbrook99 & laplatinum I don’t know either of your other options which would make it easier to make an objective statement on the magnitude of 200k+ dollars. In my opinion, if it’s really that big of a stretch to make BC’s payments, it probably isn’t worth it. Not to say that I don’t love what this school has given me as far as academic challenge and life experience, and I don’t mean to sound arrogant because I’m sure you’re on top of your finances, but I don’t think that any school on the planet is worth a mountain and a half of debt. If BC is you or your family’s dream or ideal school and you can make the payments without exorbitant sacrifices, then yes, it is worth it.

@ThaKalp There are tons of internship opportunities here at BC. In my experience so far they basically throw them at you hoping you pick one up. However, I know Northeastern has that whole work-and-study program going on so I’m not going to say you’ll definitely get as much time around your future profession at BC, but if you really are a motivated person, you’ll be in a great position anywhere you choose.

Hello Bronovan me again.
Do you know how is the MLEP ? I mean the multicultural leadership experience program. The program seems nice to me but I hear some comments that it’s just occupying all your free time.

Hi! I’m currently a freshman at BC on Newton and I just want to say that everyone helping out with this thread is awesome! bronovan, I know that you live on newton too…maybe we know each other? Um, I don’t know if this is mentioned, but if you are really thinking about BC and don’t really know what classes to take there is a kind of like ratemyprofessor website called PEPS. Google search it with Boston College. Hopefully, you will find that someone that will change your life here!

@pinewu, i’ve never heard of MLEP but i’d definitely try and apply for some sort of leadership programs (shaw, mlp, elp) it’s a good way to meet people

@fraire
You should check it out. It’s the Multicultural Leadership Experience Program or your “mlp” may refer to it. I’ve had a multicultural experience before and definitely want to have more. However, my concern is how the MLEP program in BC is and how much time commitment it takes. Hope someone could share some views.

How is pre-med in Boston College ?

@pinewu I haven’t heard of it either, but if you’re concerned about that position specifically but still want some sort of leadership program, you’ll definitely find a bunch of others that may not take as much time.

@drgreenhead There are many pre-med students here so I would assume it has a strong program, but beyond that, I would go to BC’s official website for more precise information on that. It’s definitely out there somewhere, hundreds of kids come here for pre-med every year.

How are the freshmen dorms?
Are there sinks in some/all of them?
Is there air conditioning?
Is buying the football season ticket something lots of students, especially freshmen, do?
What are some things that I should add to my to-buy list?

I’m from socal and while I’m ready to embrace the long, harsh winters of New England, I’d love some advice
Is a 600-fill north face down jacket enough? Should I get shearling boots? Rain boots? Beanie, gloves? Do girls wear leggings under their jeans when it gets really cold?

The freshmen dorms are nearly all the same, whether on Upper or Newton. A few of the dorms are actually really big buildings with a few dorms in them. Kostka is all girls and Medeiros is honors. Most people live in doubles, but there are some triples and quads. Some of the triples have bathrooms (aka sinks)- but not all. None of the doubles have sinks. I don’t think there’s air conditioning in any of the freshmen dorms if it’s any consolation the heat works really really well

Yes! I bought football season tickets, some people also buy hockey ones too! You should definitely get rainboots, a hat, gloves/mittens…I’m guessing next winter will be colder than this past one. Boots are a really good idea too! I’ve never worn leggings under jeans but one time I wore tights under my jeans when I was really really cold. You definitely need scarves and cozy sweaters!
