All suites in Grad Center (save the rare apartments with kitchens) are exempt from the suite fee because the common hallway doesn’t count as a furnished common room. I’m not sure why there weren’t any outlets, though… all the suites I’ve seen have had at least one in the hallway and plenty in individual rooms.

I think what BrownParent is referring to is some elusive Grad Center suite where the hallway looks more like a substantial common room, which I vaguely remember existing.

What are the most popular and least popular majors?

Most popular (by number of concentrators): Econ, Bio + Human Bio, IR

There are far too many concentrations with very few students for listing them to be a good use of time; why does popularity of concentration matter to you? Knowing that might help us give more useful information.

Yeah, mgcsinc, it was some freak suite and is that was a ‘hallway’, it was really large and looked like a room to me. And unfurnished. She furnished it from castoffs from Sr’s the previous spring and had friends store stuff in their basements. They had a couple big easy chairs, TV, table in there.

Hopefully this might help.

Hi,

First, I just want to say that this is really a nice idea! I think it’s awesome that Brown students are taking the time to do this!

I really want to get into Brown-RISD, but that’s pretty much irrelevant haha. Anyway, I have a couple questions:

Do you know any kids in the Brown-RISD program, and if so, are they doing well/happy with it?

Is Brown really the easiest Ivy League college to get accepted to?

Sorry if these were asked already! But thanks for taking the time to read over and answer my questions :).

2’. A little bit of due diligence is all you need to answer that question.

[Let me google that for you](LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You)

Lemme just start out by saying that if you want to get into Brown-RISD, then it’s definitely not going to be easy. As for the rest, Google that ish

^Alright, thanks both of you!

I’m think I have a fair shot of getting in, but there’s thousands of other students just as qualified as me, and lots probably even more qualified. But I’m aiming to try and do even better than before on my last SAT in a couple weeks.

As for the Brown-RISD thing: I really hope that they accept more than like 20 students that I read about. That sounds pretty impossible to gain acceptance to!

AzureStar: nope. Brown-RISD really just admits that many students. It’s a very prestigious program.

What have your experiences- or those of people you know- been with the support given by the Brown community or administration. I recently heard that if one can easily fall through the cracks if they are not really active in hunting down opportunities. Thoughts?

“I recently heard that if one can easily fall through the cracks if they are not really active in hunting down opportunities.”

It’d probably be a good idea to be a bit more specific about what you mean here – people are going to interpret this in different ways and give you a range of answers.

The vast majority of what I did at Brown – classes I took, extracurriculars I was involved in, etc. – I did after learning about the opportunity from one of my peers. I certainly never felt unsupported.

I saw someone wrote a while back asking about the pre-med advising at Brown. I applied to a dual degree program (one of the degrees is MD) and I have to say I think the Brown advising is terrible. I think the success Brown sees in medical school admissions (and trust me, we are very successful) is due to the caliber of students it has. I’m at a top 20 medical school and 10% of my class is from Brown.

There is only 1 adviser, and he is also the pre-law adviser. There is never enough time to meet with him, but he is relatively responsive to e-mails. I am sorry to say that I fear the school does try very hard to protect its numbers. I have heard many horror stories of him talking people out of applying, and I personally felt like he flat out gave me bad advice my sophomore year when I expressed interest in the program I’m currently in, but I’ll cut him a little bit of slack given that I think I may be the only one from my year who applied, and typically only 3 kids apply per year (compared to the huge number of MD only applicants).

Hey everybody,

My question isn’t about Brown itself. It’s concerning Brown’s standards. I also didn’t want to start a new thread.

I received my transcript today. Last year, my GPA was 3.7 unweighted (because of a B- in both Algebra 2 and the freshman integrated science class) and my class rank was 20/148. This year my GPA is 3.8 unweighted (I think because it’s combined with last year’s, but have all A’s.) My class rank is 19/146. I’m especially annoyed because this almost guarantees that I won’t graduate in the top 10 of my class and I know that I can do better. My class rank at the end of 8th grade was 7/139.

Will my low-ish GPA and my class rank hurt me when it comes time to apply to Brown? I’m currently a sophomore and I’ll take mostly AP classes next year.

Thanks for the advice. Please tell me I haven’t completely messed up…

Hi Chelsea,

Brown does not allow students on the admissions committee, and therefore none of us is qualified to speak in any capacity as to our standards. That being said, one grade does not an application make or break.

iwannabe_Brown: Thanks. I know that not everyone who was accepted to Brown had a 4.0 GPA, but I’m sure it certainly helps. I think a 3.9 unweighted will be the best I can do.

Obviously Brown has an amazing international relations program, but how is their political science department?

Hi again!

My question is: are there research opportunities for current hs seniors for this coming summer at Brown? I didn’t see any, but just checking if it’s possible :)

I don’t think they would make something like that extremely available on the website. If you live in the area and want to do research at Brown, try looking around specific professors’ websites and email them if you’re interested in what they’re doing. That’s what worked best for me when looking for research opportunities at Stanford.

Hi,I have questions here. Is brown lack of competitiveness between students? Do stuents in brown study late? Would they lose movitation if they are offered a free space?
