Unless something drastic changes my plans, I’ll be applying to Harvard SCEA and UVA EA in the fall. If I get into Harvard, I’ll probably apply to Yale, Princeton, and Stanford RD for financial aid comparisons. If I don’t, I’ll probably apply to 8-10 reaches RD.

Big state universities that have strong programs at what I want to major in. I know people like the Harvard name and all but I personally think my state flagship (UT-Austin) is just as good, if not better than Harvard. Big city, respected nationally, lots of alumni, amazing athletics, and surprisingly cheap, you can’t ask for more. Lol the colleges I’m thinking of though,

Reach: Vanderbilt, Florida (I think I heard they’re not OOS friendly, but idk)

Match: Texas Christian, U of Houston, Ohio State University

Match: The University of Texas at Austin, University of Louisville

@efeens44

Very well, I suppose logic doesn’t work upon such claims.

Someone sounds a little insecure, doesn’t he?

Alright, first and foremost, the application fees weren’t too huge of a concern for me. And tbh, they shouldn’t have been. With an approximate of $65/fee, that turns out to be $1170, which in my eyes is reasonable to provide me with a number of choices in the spring.

As for “pick and choose random schools from the top 25,” I can tell you this: each of my schools is there for a reason beyond the ranking. I won’t go through them here, but I can give you a specific reason (or a bunch) to why I added each school. I didn’t go through the top 25; a few of my schools are out of the top 25, and the bunch that are all share a few common traits I required.

It’s a pretty large assumption to make that just because someone applied to a wide range of schools, that they are automatically superficially choosing based on rankings. I had the luxury to apply to many, so I ensured that I used my privilege wisely and applied to the schools I wanted to.

And again, just because we subscribe to different admissions philosophies doesn’t make any of us “more right” than the other.

As for your platitude at the end, I’d say that spending time completing supplements is time well spent if it can better my chances at achieving my ambitions in life.

@halyconheather: You answered your own question. I don’t think you can easily do the math for the same reason you said: each school looks for it’s own character of student. Different schools weight academics, EC’s, and Essays/Recs differently, and so, their acceptance rates betray a much larger complexity of admissions. But I think it is a logical assumption to make that applying to more schools increases your probability of being accepted to one.

But aren’t you the prospective math major here? :D

@logic, i mean im not insecure but whatever floats your boat. and at what point did you produce some logically-sound argument, anywhere? 18 is ridiculous, and you even said it’d cost around $1170 (in reality it’ll be more; i’ve seen few application charges less than $75); $1170 (which I’ll round up to $1200) is an insane amount of money, and you obviously don’t have even a modicum of understanding of how much money that really is. really. you’re going to blow $1200 (let’s say half of that is necessary) to “widen” your net? if you have one specific reason for 18 different schools, and 10 of those 18 are in the USNWR top 25, you got starry-eyed and probably picked 5 of the 8 ivies, duke, stanford, etc.

you sound incredibly immature, acting like $1200 in application fees is something to sneeze at. it’s not. your pedantry and elitism are also incredibly inane for the type of discussion we’re having.

if you honestly think spending hundreds of hours on applications is time well-spent then i pity you. you obviously have a skewed sense of how the real world works.

wow. i still can’t get over the fact you said $1170 in app fees is reasonable. wow.

“acting like $1200 in application fees is something to sneeze at. it’s not.”

I guess it sort of is compared to the cost of college itself. It’s not as easy to notice the difference between $250,000 and $251,200.

Someone found a thesaurus. Nice job.

The last time I checked, it doesn’t take “hundreds” of hours to write fourteen 500 word essays. It took me about 2 hours each, so that’s 28. I started in October, so being conservative and stating a period of 70 days, that amount of time becomes extremely insignificant. And, I actually enjoy writing (crazy I know), so I thought it was time well spent.

I have different reasons for each different school. Every school is there for a reason that goes beyond name.

As for money…we each have different standards, do we not? We come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and have been raised in different social environments. What is reasonable to me may be “ridiculous” to you. And that’ fine. What isn’t fine is your attempt to impose your ideals on me.

I understand perfectly well how much money that is: I’ve made that much on my own through work, investing and business. And though it wasn’t my own money I spent on app fees, I can say that I didn’t add schools haphazardly like you seem to assume.

i love how im some bumbling idiot to you haha

Did I say that?

it’s easy to overlook how much money something costs (even if you claim to understand it by saying “well i’ve made that much money” - i did too, working for a grocery store 40 hours a week in the summer. it sucked) when daddy’s paying for it ;)

I won’t dispute that, but I did what I did for the rationale that I’ve explained. If you still can’t understand my perspective, then I have nothing more to say.

I noticed Dartmouth was on your list. Just a warning if you are in the AP Program: it was just announced that they do not accept Ap credits starting with the class of 2018 (us)

Wow 18 schools that is a bit much I think. I applied to 7 and even I thought that was A LOT of money. 1170 could get me my housing and tuition deposit for 2 years and I would still have some left over.

I make that in like 3 months working part time it is a lot.

Seriously guys I would keep it at 10 schools tops if you apply to a good range of schools and have safeties you will be ok. Problems also arise when you do the Fafsa and realize the only do 10 at a time.

I may or may not narrow this list down come senior year. But if I get into Brown PLME ED, I will be the happiest person in the world. No joke.
