Current sophomore in LSA..ask me anything

The rec centers offer yoga and zumba classes, but there is a fee for those.

dnwjd83: Both the Central Campus and North Campus Rec Buildings and the IM Building are free to use for students, unless, like Pokieg said, you want to take classes.

thatrunnerkid: No, I don’t believe so. Even kids who got in preferred admission are LSA students for their first year.

Preferred admits can use the gym at Ross at the same price as other business school students ($100 per semester). Anyone can join the gym as a “guest” at a price of $175 a semester

Ah, okay, well there’s your answer. ^ I don’t recommend it, though. It’s a nice place but the CCRB and the IM Building have everything you need for no cost. Though if you can pay the $200/year without it impacting you financially at all, then go for it.

Do you think I have any chance of getting in with a 3.5 GPA and a 27 or 28 composite ACT, I am from MI. Thanks ;D Im going to be an undergrad

Im interested in either business or psychology if that helps!!

Is the social life dominated/bent on particular aspect of campus life (i.e. frat life at Dartmouth, NYC attraction/night life at NYU, etc.)? I feel like things like football and basketball are big at Mich, two attractions I feel little affinity for.

How hard is it to network and get to know your classmates and ‘build solidarity’ with them given UMich’s huge size?

Is there any sense of hierarchy or anything with Ross students? It seems everyone I know applying to or going to Mich is either in its engineering or Ross spheres of influence - does it come with a dose of pretentiousness to match?

Thanks!

Can you describe CSP?

hooooly **** I totally forgot I even started this thread. gimme a minute, I’ve got you all

@guitarkid49 - I’m an econ and biomolecular sciences double major (I plan on attending medical school). I might even add a stats major my senior year if I’m crazy enough.

@JRswish - I think all the dorms are pretty social. I live in Mojo myself and the community is pretty close knit, we’ve talked to everyone on our floor at some point in our time here and they’re all great people.

What are your thoughts on the Honors program, specifically the dorms? I was recently accepted, but I want another opinion. I heard the dorms are not as social or fun as some of the other ones, and spending time with the same people can get boring.

@HONORLIONS - Yeah, I’d say sports is the biggest at Michigan. Apart from that, the campus itself is really diverse, I haven’t really been able to pinpoint a specific culture that exists here.
With regards to socializing, it is very easy. I’m out of state and knew zero people coming in, but on the move in week everyone had their doors open and I made tons of friends on my floor. Not to mention you’ll make quite a few friends from your extracurriculars. It’s weird to think about it but even though I came in knowing no one, there’s almost never a time when I walk for 10 minutes without seeing someone I know.
Engineering folks aren’t too pretentious on the whole, but Ross is definitely a little douchier. But that’s somewhat common among business students among many universities. When you first come in, basically everyone is either pre-med, a ross pre-admit, or applying to ross, but that number will go down pretty dramatically in a year or so.

@hopes2b - Honestly, I haven’t heard any spectacular things about the honors program. If you’re into the extra required classes, go for it I guess, but if you like the Honors name then you can just do an honors thesis down the road before graduation. I’ve heard it’s just generally a hassle with all the extra classes with no real reward.
