Current Student Answering Q's

Could you talk specifically about your own living situation and roommates? Specifically about the form. Like, do your roommates have a lot in common because of the form you filled out? Stuff like that.

And could you tell us a little about what your average Harvard day looks like? Almost like a run through of your daily schedule and the things you do? :D

I private messaged you. My personal situation is a bit complicated and my roommate and I were not compatible. But in general, the form does a GREAT job with roommate matches. The form is about compatibility. It asks questions about things like smoking, noise level, social level, intended sleeping hours, etc. There are also more subjective free response fields that ask about your quirks, and about what you want in a roommate. Most people have really random things in common with their roommates. It is SUPER important to be honest and candid on your application so that you actually like your roommate situation. Don’t paint an idealized picture of yourself, because you will likely be matched with someone who doesn’t match your true preferences.

My typical weekday schedule:

9-9:30 AM: Wakeup and get ready
9:30-10 AM: Quick breakfast in Annenberg
10 AM-12 PM: Classes (I schedule mine back to back and try to schedule 2/day, sometimes I have more or less class though which just shifts the time I get lunch and how much free time I have)
12-1 PM: Lunch in Annenberg
1-2 PM: Extracurricular/work time (I usually just do things I have to get done - like cleaning, getting mail, making calls, doing outreach, event planning, etc)
2-3 PM: Free time (sometimes naps, sometimes hanging with friends
3-4 PM: walk over to athletic facility, get ready, and chat with teammates
4-6 PM: practice
6-7 PM: strength/conditioning training
7-7:30 PM: shower, change, get ready
7:30-8:30 PM: eat dinner with teammates, usually in upperclassman dining hall
8:30 PM-2 AM: studying, hanging with friends, small social events, work/extracurricular stuff (sometimes meetings are scheduled, but I often just have productivity tasks to work on alone), etc depending on what I need to do. I sometimes go to Brain Break (late night snacks in Annenberg and dining halls) if I am hungry.
2 AM: Usually in bed by 2, but often earlier

One day a week, I also have ROTC commitments, so I get up SUPER early for a class and have a lab course at night that cuts into practice, dinner, and social time. Otherwise, though, my schedule is pretty standard.

On weekends, I don’t have class or practice. During the day, I often do homework or study. A lot of extracurriculars also have events or commitments on weekends - so I go to lots of meetings, conferences, or social events. I also make a point to go to Boston with my friends or do fun things in Cambridge (restaurants, shopping, etc) with friends on weekends since I usually have time. I often have sports games on weekends, and will sometimes attend games for other teams with my friends (athletes are really supportive of one another). At night, I don’t usually do homework unless I have a huge assignment or test. I often go to parties (both big ones and small room parties or even just hanging out with my friends low key), team social events, things like that. Sometimes I go to plays. Sometimes I go on dates and stuff like that. It changes based on the weekend, but I never feel bored. I still usually eat in Annenberg on weekends, even if I grab 1-2 meals out. Sunday brunch in Annenberg is the best, haha.

Thanks for being so informative! I really hope I’m not bothering you with all these questions, haha. I’m just super curious about what Harvard is like, even though I’m still a little ways away from even applying.

If you don’t mind could you share some of the stuff you do in Boston with friends? When I visited, I was with their grandpa who doesn’t like to walk much so I couldn’t explore the city as much as I would’ve liked to.

And do they have any Asian food on campus? There’s no way I can live without the stuff, haha. And can I bring my rice cooker with me if I were to get in? XP

rsivyhopeful: That sounds amazing! Can’t wait for Harvard.

OH and before I forget can you also talk about the housing thing that happens sophomore year? I’ve heard references to it and I’m not 100% sure what it is.

(Thank you once again for all your help!)
