Current Student...ask Away

ap comp sci ab (skipped a), ap spanish lit, ap gov, advanced calc (ap bc + some more advanced calculus), ap phys c mechanics, ap eng lit

...no "joke" ap's in my opinion
+ 6:30AM jazz band everyday and band during day

Assuming that your classes are at or slightly beyond the level of the AP exams and assuming you don't try to take 20 units first quarter or take especially difficult classes I would say it is very likely that your workload will at least feel lighter, it might actually be less demanding as well.

what do they mean by 'weeding out the pre-meds'?

First- where are most of you current students from and secondly, what schools did you choose Stanford over?

I'm from Los Angeles.

I got into Stanford EA so I only applied to Swarthmore and Yale, waitlisted at Yale. Visited Stanford and Swarthmore and decided Stanford was definitely the place for me.

What other colleges were you accepted to?

are there cliques like high school?

From Chicago, chose Stanford over Princeton.

i was wondering your advice on STANFORD UNIVERSITY>
Would you say if you had a friend with a car you could go to San Francisco relatively easy? (not every weekend, but just 2x per month lets say? )

:D

How does the workload compare with high school, specifically junior year?

I retract my statement that it feels like I have less work here than I did in high school. I have more work than I ever did in high school this quarter. That's what happens when you take 50 series math, 60 series physics, physics lab, IHUM, PWR, and audit a comp sci class. 22 hours of class/week! Wohoo!

You're taking 6 classes? Oh man

hey guys,

sorry i haven't responded lately. classes and other stuff have sucked the life out of me...in a good way of course.

6 classes? damn. 50 series math, 60 physics, ihum, pwr, and cs? isn't that like 20+ units. crazy man.

I'm not actually officially taking cs so it's only 19 units.

hey marlgirl--
how is the 60 series of physics, anyway? some people we both know, i think, are trying to do 120 and 121...

yeah, math 52h is killing me :-) (so i guess i'd be one of those who study all day? i don't know, i feel like i have a lot more time now, there's just room to breathe and work and not stress 24/7--but things do tend to pile up)

They are just crazy smart. This quarter is easier than last. (That's not saying much though, as the final last quarter made me reconsider being a physics major because I was worried I didn't have what it takes.) I'm not super brilliant so I've found that the class is rather difficult, although this quarter is much, much more managable than last. (I can actually do the problem sets on my own, whereas last quarter I didn't do a single problem set without plenty of help.) The 60 series is very worthwhile if you like physics, I've enjoyed it a lot. I just wish I was a bit better at physics.

www.harker.org/achievements/index.htm

Harker is just... wow. I'm good friends with the val who is just amazingly brilliant.

lol, i went to harker for a while in MS, hated it...i mean, did fine, had a 4.6 gpa, got 30 awards per year or whatever -- but jeesh, it was overkill, too much stress, too much busywork, and too many random awards

marlgirl: apparently they've been curving physics 61 grades upwards? three people i know who had a's got a+'s. check axess

re: cliques
i don't think anybody's cliquey, but your social life tends to revolve around your dorm life

re: workload
it's a completely different pace and a different dynamic. you aren't going to class from 8 to 3 or whatever, and you don't have structured daily assignments. makes the concept of workload that much more nebulous

How are the people at Stanford? Are people snotty at Stanford and strut their wallets? How is entertainment at Stanford, the sport teams good?
