Current_Student had a comment on page 1 about SLE(Structured Liberal Education). My D is in it this year, and she likes it a lot. Its not everyone's cup of tea, but for the right person its great. I like the fact that you live with your classmates--keeps the discussion going, and get to know people better with common interests. It takes up 60-65% of your class hours, so it leaves you time for other courses. There is a lot of writing, which is good. A wise fellow at the bookstore complimented her for taking SLE this past Sept. He said it is rigorous, but said SLers are to be praised for taking the high road, as he said some kids get into Stanford and try to coast. I agree with taking the high road; don't know about the coasting.
She had one SLE prof who was tough, but it was the good kind--pushing her to excel, and I think it worked. More importantly, I know she thinks so.
BTW, point: We visited over 30 colleges over 3 years, including all the Ivies except Penn, and Stanford's overall ambience, beauty, and weather shames them all. I was awestruck by the place. I wish I was as smart as my D and I could have gone there back in The Day.

Hello. I don't really have specific questions. I'm a language major (junior currently) and am kinda looking at Stanford and was just wondering if you could tell me about it. if you like it, was it hard to get in to (I already looked up their requirements and currently seem to fit, but maybe they still won't take my scores and whatnot) so yeah just like general info on the school/campus/area would be MUCH appreciated. : )

Eh, SLE's not that rigorous. It's more work than IHUM, yes, but you also get more credits. It's comparatively easy to carry a 19-20 unit courseload with SLE because the 9-10 units you get for SLE are probably more equivalent to 6-7. What's really different about SLE is not necessarily the rigor, but the atmosphere. Sure, Yale has DS. Princeton has humanistic studies. But SLE-ers live together, and that creates an odd sort of cohesion. We all have papers due at the same time, we all crack the same jokes about aristotle and aquinas, we all make fun of the same professors. It's a lot closer to the feel you'd get at a place like St. John's, but only lasts a year and allows you the freedom to still take advantage of an incredible university that loves to get its students researching and engaged in scholarship.
Feel free to drop me a line about SLE (PM me).

Where can I find a very detailed campus map?

I am looking for the name of the street where there is a house with a Croatian flag. Across from the house is a grass field, and next to it on the same street are more similar houses...they look like themed dorms?

Help! Thanks

----i'm not sure what the club is like, but i know they go on weekends to train and stuff (not sure where). prob not every weekend though. and i would say bring your own stuff, b/c renting is expensive, and every dorm has a ski trip to tahoe winter quarter, and having your own crap will save you some money.
heres there website http://www.stanford.edu/group/skiing/

what did you write your essay about?
