Current student experiences at Reed?

My daughter is interested in applying to Reed. We are on the east coast so it will be a big step for her if she is admitted. We have visited the campus and spent time in Portland and she loves it. I am looking for information from Reed students regarding the campus vibe and the academics. She would be an undecided major but her strengths are English and writing. Would love to hear the negatives as well as the positives.

Hi! I’m currently a reed freshman and I moved from Philly. It’s definitely a big change but if it’s right for your daughter I can not recommend it more. I’m so happy here and Portland is a beautiful city. Reed is definitely rigorous so if you’re looking for a party school or anything other than a lot of studying, this isn’t the place for you. But if your daughter likes writing, Reed is a great place! The English classes here are tough but very educational! The mandatory freshman class hum 110 will have you reading about 2-3 books a week and writing an essay every 2-3 weeks. If you can find the right support systems and friends to balance the academic and social aspects at reed… it truly is a magical place.
