I wish I could post a picture of son’s closet. He’s in Memorial and has a walk-in closet with a door. More space than he needed. Once you find out your dorm assignment, you can look up floor plans on the internet and get an idea of the room layout.

I’ll agree with the Amazon Prime account. I use it all the time. Just sent Son his Valentine Candy through Amazon. We’ve bought most of his books from them. Last week, he spilt water on his computer mouse. He ordered it off amazon and had it in 2 days. I’ve sent pistachio’s, k-cups and cheese-its.

I learned a lot last year from this board so I’m happy to share.

So funny to hear that you are ordering cheez-its from Amazon, because I am too. Cheeze-its and Goldfish are hard to find on campus…and those are important snacks for some people!

OK – never would’ve guessed Cheez-its, but great to know! And also never would’ve imagined there would be a walk-in closet in a dorm room. More space than he needed?! A girl’s dream! We will plan on the Amazon Prime Student subscription. And it looks like SunTrust Bank (which we also have locally) is the way to go. Biggest question now is whether to get the cowboy boots now or wait til she gets down there. Love that.

One more thing to think about, is to make sure you know where other Targets, walmarts and such are located. We are local, so pretty easy to get stuff to our girls if they need it. However after moving my oldest in, we needed some more command strips, command hooks, a pool noodle (to put on metal bar under bunk after hitting our heads on it several times) and one more power strip. We scooted to the nearest Target. NOT ONE command strip, hook or power strip was left in the store!! I forgot that Belmont, Lipscomb, trevecca, and Vanderbilt all moved in the same weekend, and every out of town student cleaned out the store! Order in advance! Also, there a several dollar general stores close by that we cheaper and less crowded. BBB is at Opry Mills, and it’s a great mall to also do some clothes/shoe shopping if you want to save space. My daughter’s friends who live far away had great experiences with boxes shipped to freshman…quick, moves fast and efficient. Not the same experience with upperclassmen. Lines are LONG and not efficient. Restaurants on division are easy walking distance from freshman dorms and I highly recommend walking there with your freshman for meals . Soul shine pizza, the slider house, chuys, and Hot Chicken are must eats. Chuys is one of the local restaurants on the Vandy meal card

Boots are an interesting purchase. When we toured Vandy, we went downtown and bought three pairs (one for each daughter) at the buy 1 pair, get 2 free shop. Then when D was accepted, my husband introduced her to real boots. French’s boot store on 2nd; American made boots. French’s has beautiful boots, and the guys working there know how to fit them. If your daughter will wear them alot, its worth the price for the comfort of the more expensive boot. If she will only wear them 5-6 times a year to football games, then its not worth the price.

A few years back there was a show on one of the cable channels that featured VUMC in about 6-8 episodes. One of the first episodes featured a small segment with ER residents treating Vandy coeds who had severe blisters from their “unbroken” cowboy boot worn all day for tailgating/football games. In the conversation, the attending told them it happens every fall.

My D bought a pair at the buy1, 2 free shop on Broadway in 2006 with some sorority sisters and they were great boots, only replaced this past Christmas because they were looking pretty rough. However, I’ve been in there and it seems like it’s a crapshoot as to what you find.

Every student should buy boots at some point during their time here. Definitely not something to worry about before moving in for guys. Girls do tend to come with at least one pair.

I think most of us find boots very comfortable-- this blisters thing is nonsense!

The boots thing is cracking me up! Neither of my Vandy girls have cowboy boots, and refuse to wear them…probably because we are somewhat local. Mine say the sure way to spot someone NOT from around here are the boots! I think they’re adorable with dresses, my girls don’t!..so yay! Saves me some money!

So funny, moonpie. DD has wanted boots since before our pre-app visit, but I told her she could get some real ones if/when she was accepted. (So happy to get to pay up now!) So, since someone mentioned the football games… how dressed up do the gals get? Is it like the Girls in Pearls/Guys in Ties drill at another southern school?

The Greek students tend do the pearls/ties deal for tailgating and football games. Maybe not as extreme as other schools. Lots of sundresses. Vandy colors are a plus, but not expected or all that common. Definitely becoming more common recently though. There are “blackout games” where, as the name implies, all students wear black.

Many non-Greeks just wear typical Vandy gear to games.

I just mentioned this in another thread-- the financial aid office has always been incredible responsive. Glad you’re having the same experience.

Just an aside: be prepared for wacky weather at Vandy! For example, it was 78 degrees yesterday, with amazing thunderstorms (and some tornado warnings) last night. It’s supposed to get back down to freezing in the next few days. I’m glad the closet space is decent… This has been a very strange winter, even in Tennessee.

agree with SJTH. you get the pleasure of a gorgeous campus close to a real city, but bring shoes that you can wear in pouring rain both in warm and cold. Vandy gets rain, snow, tornado warnings, and the true four seasons. Falls are rather lovely there! wind-breaking built into light coats goes a long way for the mildly cool days. A gortex or water-shedding light coat goes a long way. For guys putting a gortex over a shorter polartec jacket with windbreaking ability solves the cold rain and snow day problem…and those pieces will get even more wear separately.

Faline2 - If only I could convince my son to wear the various coats you have described. He just layers - thermal underwear, long sleeve shirt, tee-shirt and fleece lined hoody. He will wear a light rain jacket if it’s raining. As a California kid, I don’t think he knows how to wear a coat. : )

we love our breezy Cali kids in Music City. When I was there waiting tables 30 plus years ago, I served a lot of Californians in town to make deals on Music Row. The music industry has undergone such drastic change, that I don’t know if they are even still doing business face to face in Nashville but we had labels in town back then.

So, we understand that a few of the Commons dorms do not have laundry facilities (what?!). Where do those kids go to do laundry? Do many students use a laundry service? I saw one mentioned somewhere….

Laundry rooms are in each of the First-Year houses with the exception of North, East and Memorial. Students residing in North, East and Memorial are given access to a neighboring house that has laundry facilities. Washers and dryers each cost $1.25 per load. Dry cleaning and bundled laundry service is also available on campus. Information about the service is available at www.commodorelaundry.com.
