It’s time to start a new thread for Spring Semester.
Winter Break came to an end this evening when we took our son to the airport this evening. Although I’m sad to see him go, I happy knowing that he can’t wait to get back to Vandy and his friends. He is thriving and growing as a person and as parent its exactly what you want to see. There were definitely difference this winter break than his first winter break. There were fewer nights with large groups of high school friends at our house, but still the best buddies were here just not every night like last year. He spent more time talking to and gaming with his friends from Vandy. He spent more time with us.
We’ll see him again at Spring Break when we go back to Nashville. He’s going with the pep band to the Women’s SEC tournament so he doesn’t have enough time to come home. And we’ll look for him on tv during basketball games.
I hope that you all have enjoyed your time with your student.
Thanks for starting a new thread. DS will fly back tomorrow morning. We are making his favorite dinner while he packs. I just booked his Southwest flight for coming home for Spring break.
My DD headed back this morning as well. She saw a girl that she met on the flight down and they sat together. She saw someone else she knows on the plane as well as a couple of others from Ft. Lauderdale that had a layover in Tampa. So she can share a ride with someone back to campus. I love that there are direct flights from Tampa and it only takes 1-1/2 hours … And with the one hour time change, it takes almost no time at all!!
Mine head back today… my 2 daughters and my oldest’s roommate who didn’t go home for the holidays. They were all such homebodies this time!!! They hardly went out at all, and only had a few friend visits. in year’s past, they’ve gone back early, and this time they are waiting till the last minute! It’s nice, but I’m ready to have my house back and to do less dishes!! They are having an exciting semester. All 3 of them, plus some friends are going to England with a Harry Potter lit class for Spring Break. they are sooooo excited! My best friend from childhood is coming tomorrow with her daughter for Belmont and Vandy auditions, and will be here for an extended stay, so I’m getting rid of 3 and adding 2!! At least I have lots of Vandy experience to help with : )
DD left this morning and, hopefully, has unpacked and settled back into her second home down on Commons. She returns excited and energized about second semester – had lots of great family and friend time over the three weeks but I know she is happy to see her college buds. She was very happy to just recently get off a wait list for a class she wanted; still hoping for some more movement in the writing seminars. It was wonderful having the house full and lively over the holidays … now feels too quiet. Will wait til tomorrow to address the tornado that seems to have gone through her bedroom during the late-night packing yesterday!
Thanks for starting this thread Go9ersjrh–kind of poignant, my DD returned to campus on Saturday for her final semester, hard to believe 3 1/2 years have flown by so quickly! She called today between classes, very excited about the one, nice to know she is not a jaded senior
Not sure what the future holds for her but feel that she has a great foundation from Vanderbilt for which we are grateful (especially since she will be starting off without crippling student loans, like some of her high school friends who attended elsewhere will face.)
Can’t believe my oldest will graduate this semester as well. She has a GREAT final semester. Only has classes Tuesday/Thursday. No finals, only projects. A great senior seminar, and all classes she’s excited about. Nice way to glide out!
@moonpie Congatulations! Does she have plans for post-graduation? I’ve always thought that the college years are when they are learning how to fly but could come back to the nest whenever they need plus mom and dad are making sure they have a roof over their head and food to eat. Now graduation from college is really about leaving the nest and setting up their own nest. We could only hope!
Since you live in the area, your graduation plans should be easier than those that live away. Although, it may be more work since more people may want to be part of the celebration. No matter what, it’s an exciting time.
Spring Break plans are in place. Airline tickets are purchased. Rental Car and Hotel reserved. A couple of things I learned. It was less expensive to rent the car near the university and return to the airport, then to pick up and return to the airport even when considering the cab ride at the beginning of the trip. The Hilton family of hotels has a Vanderbilt Parent’s Club. Using it we are able to stay at the Homewood Suites right accross from campus at the same price as the nonrefundable room rate.
Son is doing great. He likes all his classes. Now if he’d only work on the resume and making his summer plans.
It’s under academic record. Then you go to academic detail. You can see the dean’s list icon there.
You can also go to the term report to see the Award/Honor section.
Haven’t checked in in a while, but hello all. Sorority rush was such a positive experience for our daughter – really impressed with everyone’s behavior throughout and happy for our girl with how all turned out. Hope all is well on everyone else’s end as well.
Hello. Are there any parents who have experienced with Maymester. I am also interested in talking to any parents who have a student in McGill House or considering it. Thanks!
Our son lived in McGill half of junior year (went abroad) and senior year. Feel free to PM me. He enjoyed his single room and many other aspects of McGill, and has maintained with several McGill graduates. Sophomore year he proposed a concept for a Mayfield Lodge with 9 other students and they did win a Lodge. 10 single rooms, one bath and kitchen. His Lodge was also co-ed. Still friends with many of his Mayfield Lodge mates although they were hugely different from each other and had a wide range of backgrounds and majors.
go2girl also felt extremely positive about Rush and is now enjoying her new “sisterhood.” She was originally on the fence about joining a sorority but very clearly has drunk the Kool-Aid and is extremely excited! I think it helped that she had minimal expectations and was not going into it thinking that one house was going to be “the house.” It will just be one more layer to an already extremely positve college experience.
