I am an international student, and I have always heard about Duke's prestige. What exactly distinguishes Duke from other colleges? If you are a current student at Duke, what impresses you most about this college?

To be honest, I have finished my WhyDuke essay. I just want to hear some voices from current students, because I am not able to visit the campus…

I was in your same shoes in having to apply to Duke before ever seeing it for myself.
I very much enjoy the social life on campus. I think that’s something that few other schools have. I also really appreciate the importance the school puts on academics. Classes are always a challenge and until now I have only dealt with outstanding professors who love what they do.
I hope that helps you paint a better picture of Duke.

I think “what distinguishes Duke” is really an issue that only you can answer…for it involves who you are, what you are seeking and how well Duke matches that.

My son looked at several colleges and found Duke’s reputation world-class academics, Work Hard/Play Hard, community engagement, and nationally ranked sports made Duke stand out. He especially liked one particular program.

For you, it may be something different based on what interests you. My daughter for example has no interest in sports and wants to live in a large city…she likes NYU, UPenn, and UChicago.

basketball for sure!
and definitely our party scene. there are frat parties Wednesday through Saturday…Duke goes harder than other top schools I would say.

Thanks guys! How about internship opportunities? Is Durham a middle sized city? Since I am going to major in engineering, are there lots of internships around Duke?

Concerning internships, I think you will find the most valuable opportunities over the summer in cities like DC and New York where you will enjoy an array of alumni network and support groups to guide you in finding great professional opportunities.

I think Duke students are very cooperative and not as cut throat as students at peer schools. I am a pre med and we are supposed to be notoriously cutthroat and competitive, but at Duke people are more than willing to help you out. Its not like the students are trying to put each other down to show themselves in a positive light, rather they are confident about their abilities and want to succeed the right way.

Duke is a great school that provides a balanced experience of academics and social life. Its major draw back is its location–Durham does not provide much positive to the undergraduate experience there–so it tends to be more appealing to students who want a campus-centric life without much involvement with a broader community.
