Current Students: Why do you like/dislike McGill? (Updated)

Currently contemplating between UWO, UofT, and McGill; specifically transferring into the business programme in my 2nd year...so current students, or alumni, why do you like/dislike McGill?

Also, mind chiming in on word that McGill is slipping? Not simply in its rankings, but overall?

I’m not sure what you mean by slipping but I can say that there are definite budget challenges at McGill that do not exist at other Canadian universities. This is largely in part due to a lack of provincial funding in Quebec and the policies that allow QC residents to pay far less than students from other provinces, and the financial benefits afforded to French speaking students. I know that these challenges have directly affected the law school and I’m guessing other faculties as well.

@alwaysamom , when you say directly affected the law school, you are referring to graduate studies at McGill, right? Do you think, for example, getting a bachelors from Desautels would hinder employment because McGill is slipping in it’s rankings? That is to say, it would appear that the University of Toronto and UBC have surpassed McGill on many academic rankings, however, I’m well aware of the fact that rankings should probably be taken with a grain of salt, even so, being a prospective student, it’s hard to have an accurate grasp on what to expect out of the school. Ps, thank you for your response!

I’m referring to the law school. I don’t know specifics about how those challenges may affect other faculties at McGill but common sense tells me that there are effects throughout the school. Rankings in Canada mean very little and should, in my opinion, be ignored for the most part. You can likely get a good education at any of those three. Where do you want to work after graduation? That may inform your decision in a more important way.

@alwaysamom I want to work in the States and if in Canada, Toronto. I’m worried that McGill’s slipping reputation will affect job placement after graduation. Also, would you happen to know how hard it would be to transfer from the arts faculty to the business faculty at McGill?

Sorry, nightlights, I don’t know how difficult it would be to change from arts to business. My guess would be that it would not be easy.

McGill slipped from 18th to 21st place in the QS rankings. If you want to call that in decline then feel free to do so.

Many McGill applicants are rejected by Desautels and accepted to Arts. So transferring after first year will require a very high GPA .
