They like musicians. My son was accepted last year and I believe his musical history was key. He has played the viola for 11 years too. He also played with several musical groups during high school (all state orchestra-3 years).
He also used his math abilites and tutored kids in high school. On the Wash U application he emphasized his 2 big talents. Good luck to all the kids applying to Wash U. I hope you all get in because it is a wonderful school!!!

thanks..yes I tutor math also and am on the mu alpha theta calculus..i hope i haven't done al ltaht stuff in vain..

missmolly do you have any advice to applicants, did your son have an interview?

Kanita,

Yes he did interview, but I think the interview was optional. All I can say is Wash U has been a great experience for my son. He has met kids from all over the world in his dorm. Wash U is great school, and I hope you get to go there.

When I visited, the tour guide described Wash. U. as "not an activist campus." Does this generally hold true? Are students politically apathetic?

The school definately leans to the left, as shown in our newspaper, but the majority of the time, the campus is not politically driven. During the debates, things started to get really heated, but now that it's over, everything has gone back to normal.

leftness= good....apathy=dissapointing....

Yeah, that's one of the things that's holding me back from Wash U...I'd rather a Wesleyan any day.
