Anyone affected? https://www.curtis.edu/admissions/audition/
“Voice/opera auditions scheduled for March 12–15 have been canceled as have those in violin (March 20–21) and cello (March 25–26). Composition interviews will be conducted by Skype.”
“Should updated information on COVID-19 permit a discussion of rescheduling any of these auditions, affected applicants will be contacted. While this is no doubt extremely disappointing, Curtis will be in contact with the applicants about options to audition next year.”
Well, I should say that the above is certainly understated. Amazing that Skype auditions and/or recordings aren’t being substituted. Did they contact applicants in advance of the announcement so auditioners travel could be cancelled? Many more thoughts that I will keep to myself…
Yes - 3 vocal performance candidates and 1 cello performance candidate at last count - discussion on the 2020 pre-screen thread…
Now that my college senior’s performances are cancelled for the rest of the year, missing the audition opportunity and losing the money from her Econo non-changeable ticket is kind of small potatoes.
She’s very sad and so are we.
We’re all in this together and doing the best we can. We must trust that future opportunities will abound. We need our performing artists more than ever.
I am really sorry. That must be SO frustrating for all of you. As if audition season isn’t stressful enough! I’m sure it will all work out in time. But for the time being, I know it must be rough. Take good care.
The Philadelphia Orchestra cancelled all their concerts until April 1. Our county has been “closed” by the Governor (ALL schools, community buildings, entertainment venues, retail stores) until April 1. The Archbishop of Philadelphia just made Mass optional (not a sin to miss). I hope these measures are effective in protecting the vulnerable.
Thanks, @buoyant. I have not followed that thread.
@songbirdmama - I also hope the measures are effective. Sadly, I think this is necessary.
I do not understand Curtis simply cancelling with a “see ya next year” message. There are a number of instances through the years when conservatories have been impacted by bad weather causing cancellations of auditions. Videos were used.
Curtis apparently feels that “live” is the only option available even in these absolutely extraordinary times. ( I disagree - my own offspring have completed video auditions for professional orchestras outside of the US.) I don’t think Curtis represents itself well by ignoring options such as Skype and video auditions and working with applicants during these times.
