Curve in Engineering Class

In my engineering class there is only one other student, that is not a typo, the two of us make up the entire class. The class started with 4 students and then two of them dropped. The engineering professor is very strict, the highest grade on the first and second tests was a 50. When I looked at the syllabus, it said that a score of 75-89 would give you a B in the class. When I looked through the syllabus I saw this statement: “In general, A’s and B’s are curved, but D’s and F’s are not. Any curve is based on the final(overall) course grade.” I did not bring this up to the professor but I wanted to hear an opinion. Does this mean that either the other student or I will be curved to an A as a final course grade?

You should go ask the professor. The rest of us will just be guessing.

But also remember, I don’t want my bridges built by someone who got a 50 in engineering class.
So start going to the professor’s office hours and get a tutor.

I completely agree with both statements, my proficiency in the class is high. From what I have heard, the professor is notorious for failing students for unjust reasons. When I went to his office hours to ask a question, he said he wished that we all dropped his class because he did not want to teach it. The other engineering professors have reviewed our tests and have agreed that the scoring was unjust, I am just curious about the curving situation.

Update: Someone told me that this professor fails everyone during the year and then gives them a grade based on their rank in the class. In a class of two students, would one receive an A and the other an F? or a B?

Who knows how he will curve / if he will curve. Given that he’s got a rep for unjust grading, it’s hard to even predict. That said, I honestly would have recommended not taking the course from him, it’s just not worth the hassle or the potential F that could come your way in an arbitrary manner. Proficiency may not matter to him in the end…having students he can terrorize seems to be his thing. Good luck to you, hope you get through and never have to take a class from him again
