Cutthroat competition for class council positions

The title's pretty self-explanatory. During elections at my school, the girls in my grade go crazy. They try to find out who's running for what, and they try to apply for the spot that's empty (so that they'll automatically get the spot, since they don't have to run against anyone). The campaigning weeks are always worse & cutthroat.

Is having a student council position that important in the college admission process? I overheard this year's vice-president being asked, "Hey, do vp's do a lot of work?" and she answered, "No, that's why I chose it. And ofcourse, it'll look good on my college apps." I mean, won't the college admission officers notice this shallowness? None of these girls had the same position for consecutive years, because they kept switching to unopposed spots. If they actually worked hard for our class, I wouldn't complain. But they honestly don't even try, and it disgusts me. Last year, they earned nothing and took money out of our account for a 'class council party.' Fortunately, a lot of our students found out about this and are encouraging other people to run for these positions.

Still, I would like someone's opinion on this. Is it the same at your school? Is all of that really worth it..will having class council positions become such a great advantage? Isn't it better to show consistency and genuine interest?

That was long, sorry :p

There's mudslinging already???

Time to get out of that race!

My school's student council is comprised of one social group only (popular, magnet student Asians). They do a good job and all but don't really represent the student body. I've seen kids that do run for unopposed positions like you said. I figure if no one else wants to do it then whatever.

Yes, admissions officers will notice the shallowness. Not to worry.

My school isn't really that cutthroat, because no one really even runs for anything. The only problem is people like to complain about our classes' lack of money, but refuse to attend events that might benefit our class. Silly billies.

lol.... at my school it's competitive, but the student council actually does help organize things, such as the Prom, senior class trip, and other trips for the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors... they also do fundraisers and organize all the other school clubs.

Not really. Elections are really just popularity contests. Guess that's why I didn't win :(.

They are a popularity contest. our class president found out that someone was running against her this year, and she passed around a contract and had people sign that they would vote for her.

If you can't get onto the council, create your own club/alternative. That shows true innovation and that's what colleges will respect.

lol@Tyler09.

at my school, anyone who wants to be on student council can be :P there's like 40 people, haha. it's more of a fundraising club.
