CWV's

Not your average civilian college tour I will grant you....however, it serves the same purpose nevertheless, and someone is spending time out of their day to accomodate a visit- and while i would agree "gifts" are not appropiate, what I was referring to was a "boodle box"- hardly what I would call a bribe.

I was wondering what was customary at USNA, so oiixxg, thank you for looking into this. I will leave it up to our son to do what he is comfortable with this go around.

navy201,
Don't take this the wrong way....you really missed the point.

I worked in government for 20 years and I've worked with government in "official" hosting for another 20 years as a civilian. Your son has no risk in such an endeavor. It is the plebe who bears the burden of accepting any "trinket" without clear authorization. In some situations, it is unacceptable to even accept a cup of coffee whose expense is specifically born by the "client".

Dad2B'2010: you are absolutely correct, and from a civilian (and novice) standpoint I never considered it from that aspect at all, and I certainly don't want to put anyone in harms way- and I really did miss the point- so thanks for the claridication, and I will defer to your advice!

Do candidates need sleeping bags for CVW?

the letter our son received did not mention sleeping bags or sheets for that matter (they did say to bring a towel, swimwear and workout gear)....and basic toiletries- thats it....he is bringing a sleeping-sheet (LL bean has them) just in case

They will supply a cot so you don't have to bring a sleeping bag.

How about cameras and taking pictures within buildings, including Bancroft Hall? Any feedback from experience would be appreciated.

you dont need a sleeping bag, the mid has extra blankets and stuff he or she can let you borrow. cameras are fine to bring though.

I just talked to an admission representative today and I was initially surprised by her response regarding CWV. She first stated that college applicants' files are NOT reviewed until submission of the 1st semester transcript and when I asked her how I received CWV without their reviewal of my files, she said that I was picked by a complete random selection. I guess you don't have to be qualified at all to receive CWV.

What they told us at the October CWV is that the admissions board HAS reviewed files (maybe just high school students? They didn't specify anything different for college), and that anybody who was invited to CWV was desirable...either crossed signals or a double standard, I guess

Honestly, I couldn't imagine the process being completely random, but she told me just that. It would make much more sense if the academy sent it out to select qualified students who they would like to attract to see authentic academy life, and I see no point in creating a CWV if they really had only chosen candidates on a random basis.

Hi...the prcress is totally random...the "Drags" get up and go to meet with a group of Mids and they just pair off...no predetermined matching...If you are lucky you have some similar interests...

The matching of drags to mids is random, but parents were told at the parent briefing that those invited were selected based on their qualifications.

Now maybe, there is a pool of candidates who look initially promising, and from these there is a random selection of applicants to attend CVW. Thus we both would be correct.
