D.M.A. at Yale

Hello
i ve got some confusions of the DMA program at Yale school of music.
Applicants must have MMA, other than MM degree in order to apply for DMA.
I have already Master's Degree, but it seems like i must repeat the Master's again at Yale?

Also after 2 years of study for MMA degree, i have to work in other music field for another 2 years before to apply for DMA.
I was quite confused what kind of criteria for to apply Doctorate at Yale school of music.
Does anybody have experienced or obtained DMA at Yale ? Could u please explain?

From the link here, [Yale School of Music : Academics](http://music.yale.edu/academics/mma.html) the wording indicates that a requirement for the DMA program at Yale SOM is an MMA from Yale as well.

That appears to be the requirement. Other than that, I would contact Yale SOM and see what, if any, exceptions are made.

Actually, I believe there isn’t a DMA ‘program’ as such at Yale for performance. You have to complete a MMA at Yale, and then if you have significant success if your field you can submit an application for a DMA, at which point I believe you will be examined by papers, paper defense, and performance (not sure about those details though - check!). If you qualify, you would then be awarded a DMA. You have to submit the application between 2 and 6 years after graduating with an MMA from Yale.

It’s an interesting take on the DMA, and one that I’ve thought about, but not sure if I want to re-do what is effectively a Masters.

Hang on. The Yale MMA is /not/ like redoing your MM. It’s the degree you’re awarded at the conclusion of your doctoral coursework, just like a musicologist getting an MA when entering dissertation phase. The fact that other schools don’t do the same thing doesn’t mean Yale’s coursework is somehow more like MM programs; after all, people with the MM from Yale enter the MMA program all the time. I suspect they award the unusual degree because of the high percentage of students who never receive the DMA, in order to recognize their studies.
I have heard that the “candidacy phase,” i.e. the years of going out “to make it” prior to presenting your accomplishments and hoping they’ll give you the degree, is being reconsidered. It’s worth asking whether or not the program will remain the same.

People with the MM from Yale are eligible to do the Yale MMA with just one more year of work. That suggests to me that at least some of it is covered in the Yale MM.

Look at the course requirements, for orchestral instruments for example:

Masters (MM)

Philharmonia/New Music New Haven 8
Chamber Music 8
Seminar in the Major 8
Individual Instruction 16
*Music History 4
†Hearing 4
Electives 24
Total 72

MMA
Course Requirements

1-year internal candidates 2-year candidates

Individual Instruction 8 16
M.M.A. Seminar 12 16
Chamber Music (where applicable)4 8
Philharmonia (where applicable)4 8
Instrumental Seminar — 8
Electives 8 16
Total 36 72

Sorry about the formatting (it keeps taking out all my nice spaces!), but you can see my point right?

Anyway, a good idea to re-check the requirements to see if they change for next year.
