What do people do in the fall or winter or spring during their time off. If they take an internship is it easy to finda dartmouth roomate where u are going....?

I think maybe Sophomore year I want to take the winter off...it's just too cold up there in the Northeast! :D

I'm thinking of applying to Dartmouth and I can't decide whether or not I like hte D Plan. It's just such a unique idea... I was also wondering what people do. And don't you have to go to school during one of the summers? If anyone here goes to Dartmouth could you tell me if it's a nuisance or a great opportunity?

as a person who REALLY wants to go abroad, i think it's a great opportunity. also, it gives you the opportunity to do internships when others can't so you get the benefit of avoiding the summer rush of many other schools. yay!

As a sophomore now, I haven't done the summer term yet, but everyone I know here who has done it says it's been one of their favorite terms at Dartmouth. Since only the sophomore class is on, it's a time of bonding as well as study, and many people only take 2 classes, so there is a lot of free time to sspend outdoors, etc.

Garr,

make sure you sign up fro engs 3 (which is only given over the summer) to knock that TAS requirement out. D says Lasky is amazing (he had 300 8"s sign up last year and ended up running 2 groups).

As far as doing a study abroad or having a leave term for an internship, it does take some planning. Fortunately, you lan look at the prospective schedule of classes for about a whole year out so you will have a good idea as to which things are offered various terms.

This fall my D did an FSP, and is currently on a leave term this winter (working and studied for the LSAT). some students do multiple study abroad trips (one of her best friends went to Puebla on the spanish LSA sophomore spring, came back to campus for the summer and went to Copenhagen this past fall).

Depending on what city you end up interning at, it is not unusual for students to blitz each other about summer or leave term plans or to ask something like "is anyone living in DC over the summer and is interested in sharing some space?"

"Blitz" being Dartmouth-ese for "e-mail."

lol I didn't know that (Blitz=email)

bump bump bump

People do all sorts of things on their leave term. They often find interships - working in Boston, NYC, Washington - or anywhere in the US or the world. They work in research, in the private sector, in the public sector, on intiatives of their own creation. They may find on or off-campus research opportunities, paid internships or they may find assistance for internships through any of the following - check them out:

And Pirate Monkey - it really ends up being more an opportunity than a nuisance for several reasons. First, most sophomores very much enjoy their sophomore summer: they are only class on campus and its a great opportunity to come together as a class, the weather is beautiful - nice hot days and cool nights, there are rivers to swim in and mountains to hike, local markets to check out .... Second, their are unique opportunities available during the non-summer months when students from other schools are not competing. Third, Career Services, the various foundations and centers mentoned above, and the strong alumni network make it very possible to find a relevant opportunity or to fund an interest of your own. Fourth, despite the fact that all seasons in Hanover have their own charm and beauty, its nice to trade one of the colder terms for the beautiful sophomore summer term.

^^^Agreed. Sophomore summer is amazing.

thanks ohmadre for the links....do you know how competitive it is to get a funded internship?

Don't know exactly how competitive - there is generous funding, but of course a limit. You need to be sure you know what the application requirements, timing is. It probably helps if the internship you are seeking is in an area where you have demonstrated by course work, extra-curricular activities, a sustained interest.
