Hello,
My daughter is being recruited for basketball by several schools, several of which are D3. As it happens, I work for one of the schools, and if she chooses to go there her tuition is covered by my benefits If they offer her assistance, can those funds be used for room and board, or can they only help cover tuition only? Room and Board would come to ~15k a year, so it’s not trivial. As part of the team, it would also be mandatory. Thanks for any help!
I think your human resources department could give you a much clearer answer than any poster on this website.
I have asked HR. They could only speak to the the benefits offered me (full tuition for dependents who are accepted). I will discuss it with the Coach should the opportunity arise, but would like to go into that discussion with as much knowledge as I can.
If it’s D3, none of the aid will be athletic as there are no athletic scholarships at D3 schools.
Yes, I understand that there are no scholarships at D3. What I am asking is if the aid that she can potentially get (needs based) can be used to cover Room and Board since her tuition would be paid for.
Ah, I see. Are you concerned that there’s some sort of compliance issue because she’s an athlete? I’d probably start with the FA office and then if compliance is the concern, check with the school’s compliance officer.
It is up to the school if they want to give more aid (financial aid) over and above the tuition. Some of the schools that offer tuition benefits (or tuition exchange) allow stacking of merit scholarship and other aid, but some do not.
Being a D3 athlete has nothing to do with it. She’s not receiving any aid because she’s an athlete, she’s receiving tuition because you work there and you are applying for need based aid which you want to use to cover R&B. That’s up to the school. If she didn’t play, she’d receive the same aid - tuition because you work there and any other aid because you qualify for need based aid.
You’ll only have that answer once they offer it, you may not get anything additional since they will consider the full tuition waiver as part of the financial package.
