D3 Baseball Question

After I attended a baseball showcase I was contacted by a handful of schools, nothing too spectacular, for my pitching. I'm a crafty lefty, high 70s/low 80s, with CC level academic standards. Regardless, Carleton College caught my eye and I have made contact with the coach. Due to a back injury, I didn't pitch much during my high school season but during summer baseball I am performing, pardon the bragging, excellently. I'm leading the league in innings with a 1.3 ERA and even achieved a headline in the local (Green Bay) paper. Since I didn't really have much to send the school statistically based on the high school season, should I e-mail the coach my summer statistics in the form of an essential brag sheet or would that come off as too arrogant?

JMoneyWI,

I thoroughly understand your question. Any opportunity to continue communications with the coach is an opportunity you should take. Giving him a status update on your summer will show him how interested you are in his program. If you don’t advocate for yourself, nobody else will. I would absolutely call or email with your update. I would also ask for a recruiting timeline, what positions he is recruiting, and possibly a campus visit. You can’t be shy in this process.

In addition, I would contact those other showcase schools and any other schools you are intersted in with your summer update. The more schools interested in you the better. I would wordsmith the email with the facts and numbers so as not to come across as bragging. Let the coach(s) make his own conclusions based upon your numbers.

Good luck!

I appreciate the reassurance, fenway. I’m looking for the highly academic, D3 school and the only thing about that showcase was that it was geared a little more towards the big time player with huge D1 programs coming in to look at a select few players and smaller, less academically driven D3 programs coming to look at everyone else. Carleton looks like they can give me everything I’m looking for so I’m simply trying to not mess up my opportunity, hence my concern.

Absolutely send the stats.Go ahead and brag. The coach has met you and already made his conclusions about your personality and whether he can use a “craft lefty”. If Carleton is your dream, go for it all-out.

JMoneyWI,

I understand where you are coming from. We’ve been there. Son was recruited by both D1 and D3 programs, we’ve been to all the showcases multiple times including PG WWBA, PG Jupiter, HeadFirst and a few others. The NCAA Division doesn’t matter, and the answer is still the same…you need to advocate for yourself. Don’t assume that you have to be less agressive with D3s, they recruit too. The elite D3’s that recruited my son were just as assertive as the D1s. The only difference was their timetable and “pitch” that they were more academic focused.

I totally agree with Oldbatsiedoc. If Carleton is your dream school, go for it and don’t hold back. Good luck.
