We've just finished visiting schools, 3 of them are interested in ds and he did overnights at 2 of them. The coaches have said they want ds on the team and he has already received followups from the coaches since we returned. My question is what is the timeline for ds to accept since these aren't scholarship schools or likely letter schools? They are small liberal arts colleges where ds' SAT puts him in the top 25% and we are expecting/counting on merit aid with limited financial aid. He is working on his applications for early action at all the schools but he still hasn't decided which one he likes best. Do coaches expect to be informed before or after he is officially accepted at the school? It's not like he's a superstar prospect and I don't want him to miss out because he delayed his decision.

I would send a note to each baseball coach letting him know you have applied Early Action to that school. I would then follow up with the baseball coach to whichever school you finally decide on. This process is always about communication whether it is D1, D3 or JUCO. It is my understanding that D3 baseball coaches don’t get too excited until they know you are enrolled (with deposit) and at tryouts or practice in the Fall.

I’m not sure I understand why your son is applying Early Action to 3 schools. Is there an advantage for him to do that?

My daughter has applied early action at 2 so far and the only reason she didn’t do more is because they require early decision, and she isn’t set on any of those.

The advantage in my opinion is that you will see the packages sooner, and can make a better choice if this is one of the considerations.

The only problem is that this will happen after the November signing date, so if one of the schools comes through with an offer for a NLI, then all other bets are off.

sadilly, we are in a similar position. What is it that will help him to make his final decision? Are they D3s and his he counting on the coaches to help him get into the schools? If he is not, then it would seem to me that as long as he keeps open communication with the coaches he can make his decision when the acceptances come in, especially if merit and need-based aid are the main concerns. The coaches should understand that.

(edit: sorry, just read the title after I asked if they were D3s - d’oh)
