D3 recruiting - usual timeline?

Son went to a soccer prospect camp and there were walk-ons (admitted freshman) being evaluated as well. Coach said they are recruiting defenders for the freshman class, and made no comment about what he wants for the 2015 class.

Is that usual, to be looking at rising seniors but not focusing on them yet, for a D3 soccer program? I thought they'd be trying to recruit for the 2015 graduating class, but they are saying they are still trying to get some 2014s on their roster.

Should he expect to hear something soon? Or is September a better expectation? He also complete a mostly D2 and D3 camp, and the recruiting meeting featured a talk about how D2 and D3 coaches can't spend too much time on any one recruit, because they can't commit on paper so they have no guarantee where the player will actually end up. Does that sound true? Or are they trying to make kids feel better?

(the coach was very positive without promising anything, and said he would email my son)

D- 2 coaches can get the same commitment as D-1 coaches - an NLI signed in either the fall or spring. D-3 coaches are in a little different situation, but many want their athletes to apply ED, thus locking them into the school if not the athletics.

Div 3 schools hit the recruiting hard in the fall, attending showcase tournaments. They can’t offer any money so most applicants need to know the financial aid picture before committing. Financial aid info is usually not known until very late in the year.

It varies by school but D3 recruiting often takes place very late in the game. It is definitely late to be recruiting for the fall at this point but it is not unheard of. As far as recruitment both D2 and D3 can actively recruit but D3 can’t offer athletic scholarships. Other than that, twoinanddone is correct- D2 is basically the same as D1, and D3 may still try to lock an athlete in through ED. I would say generally that if a coach is extremely interested in a recruit he would make contact very soon. Once Sept. rolls around most coaches will be busy with the season and may not have a lot of time to recruit. Some coaches may still be looking at their position needs and may not be ready to recruit for 2015 until after the 2014 season is over. I would definitely have your son continue to stay in touch and to express interest.

Thank you, he is a 2015 and they were looking at incoming students (2014 HS grads). He will be attending fall showcases but he is also getting sold on his major (computer engineering) more and more, so he has fewer options as many schools don’t offer it. He wouldn’t get into MIT even with perfect math scores.
I will make sure he stays in contact. They did already ask him if he is going to apply, so I think that is a good sign.

Does d3 do pre-reads with admissions? He is probably most worried about using them for an ED application and then not getting in, but I think his academics are fine though probably sub-Ivy, even with an AI of 218. His only chance at an Ivy would be ED as he is a legacy, but that would be betting that if he doesn’t get into the Ivy ED, the d3 coach would still want him. Frankly, the Ivy coach seems like DA team or forget it.

An aspect of this is that the college is d1 for hockey, so the athletic facilities are REALLY nice though they are d3 for other sports, and look like the Ivy’s facilities.

A lot of schools are D-1 for mens hockey; each NCAA school can play one mens and one womens team at D-1 if everything else is at a lower division, and it is most often hockey or lacrosse. Four hockey teams did this by special agreement with the NCAA since the 70’s and they could give scholarships, and didn’t have to give any women’s scholarships. Now all schools can play one team ‘up’.

D-3 schools have been recruiting DAP 2015 players heavily for several months, particularly the NESCACs. I am not aware of anyone who has reached any type of an agreement with a D-3 school as these kids typically want to go D-1. However, I am pretty certain that if any of these DAP players said yes there would be some sort of understanding reached.

My understanding is that d3 coaches recruit at DAP events if they can, but most d3 coaches either can’t afford to go to DAP events or the events aren°t local enough. I’m sure NESCAC schools are an exception, especially with so many DAP kids in private schools.

I’m hoping the d3 will delay somewhat as seems to be indicated, or the Ivy will start realizing that they don’t have too many options at forward and have seen him enough to ramp up the process. The d3 team is traveling overseas in August, and the Ivy is going across country soon, so both are kind of busy anyway.
