Hello. My d is considering applying to Colby. She's a dancer who wants to continue dancing, probably as a minor.

1) Does Colby offer jazz dance classes? Tap dance classes?

2) Is dance at Colby College predominantly modern-based? Can she concentrate in jazz dance as a major or minor rather than in modern? Or in ballet? What modern requirements are there for either the major or minor?

3) Are your dance classes open to non-majors/minors? If so, as a practical matter, is there room for a non-major or non-minor to enroll in upper level dance classes?

4) What performing opportunities are there for non-majors/minors?

I recommend that you contact Colby's department of Theater and Dance directly, for answers to your specific questions. I know, generally, that classes in that department are open to students who do not pursue the academic major/minor, and that student groups are also similarly inclusive (the Colby Dancers, for instance, perform twice a year, and I recognize several students in each semester who have other majors/minors, but love the discipline, exercise, form and camaraderie that the club promotes). Tina Wentzel will be your primary contact in the T&D department, I imagine; the department's web address is http://www.colby.edu/theater, and Tina's email address is cmwentze@colby.edu. Hope this is helpful.

Thank you so much! Apparently my d had sent an e-mail to the wrong e-mail address; she's sent a new one to Prof. Wentzel. I appreciate the help.
