I was just wondering to what extent dance helps at an Ivy League school. I've talked to some dance faculty members at various schools and all they can tell me is that they rate the arts supplement. Do the dance departments have legitimate pull at schools of this calibur?

Doubtful, since none of the Ivies are considered big destinations for serious dancers. (Not that good dancers don’t go there.)

I disagree with sally305. While they won’t have the pull that the football coach has to get an academically qualified star quarterback, the admissions department still needs to build a class that meets all of their institutional needs which includes having academically qualified, talented dancers. If the school is having the dance department evaluate applicants’ DVDs, then the admissions office would not waste the dance departments time and ignore their recommendations. So if two dancers are competing for the same admissions slot and they have similar academic credentials, I would expect that the one that gets the better rating from the dance department to get the acceptance. Good luck!

Were you asking whether dance helps TO GET INTO an Ivy League school? You mean, as an extra-curricular activity on one’s application?
cltdad, I see your point. I was thinking more from the perspective of what schools a very serious dancer might be considering for college. Since none of the Ivies are particularly known for their dance programs, I wouldn’t think the “pull” of faculty there would help much. But you never know.
