Dance auditions and decisions 2017/18

@Artist709 I’m glad you heard something from Chapman, and congrats on wait list! At this point, Chapman is my daughter’s first choice but we did not get anywhere with obtaining a grant to reduce the cost. We were told unless something major has changed (loss of job, death, separation, medical expenses) appeals usually don’t get approved and we do not have any circumstances that fall under an appeal. I am trying to not give up hope that we can make it happen. Good luck to you as well.

We have not declined any programs yet but do think it is appropriate to send an email, especially if a scholarship is involved or there has been personal contact with the dance department. Has anyone had programs calling to see if they are coming? We have not had any schools check in, which I find a little strange. How will they know about their numbers and wait lists?

@SCMHAALUM, I would be very curious to hear how much training is available through Cardinal Ballet, if any. Has your son looked into that?

Woohoo, D18 has committed to the University of Utah for a BFA in ballet! (One down, one to go!).

Full results for reference: Admitted for dance at Utah (BFA ballet, full tuition scholarship), Oklahoma (BFA modern, $9K p.a. academic + $2K p.a. dance merit scholarship), Fordham/Ailey (BFA dance, $37K p.a. Dean’s scholarship), UT Austin (BFA dance, OOS tuition waiver + $1K p.a. merit scholarship), UC Santa Barbara (BA dance, $6K p.a. Regents scholarship), UC Irvine (BFA dance, $2.5K p.a. Regents scholarship)
Waitlisted for dance at Chapman (declined waitlist)
Rejected for dance at Butler, Indiana, Julliard, USC
Academic admission at UC Berkeley, UCLA, deferred then rejected at Princeton

@Twoin18 congrats!

@Twoin18 congratulations!

Congrats @Twoin18! It must feel good to have that behind you. I see she only applied for academic admission at UCLA. Why didn’t she apply for Dance there, because it was a B.A.?

We were waiting on the last 4 decisions which came in Thursday - 2 rejected and 2 waitlist, so it was a disappointing day. She got 5 acceptances and 3 waitlist total, and eliminated 2 of the acceptances, so she is still deciding between 3 options. So we are going back to look at UCSB (for BFA) one more time tomorrow.

@amom2girls I agree with @mom2adancer. I don’t think it can ever hurt to have good manners and say thank you!

@Pusheen1 She thought the UCLA program was weird when she visited a class (lots of lying on the ground curled up trying to find yourself). And she really wanted a ballet focus. So Indiana, Oklahoma, Butler and Utah were her top targets.

She’s flattered to have got into both UCLA and Berkeley (and if forced to choose between those two it would have definitely been UCLA). Only three kids in their class of 400 got into both as far as we know: her, her brother and one other (none of the NMFs did).

Hopefully your daughter’s waitlists come through and give you additional choices. We’ll send the declines to Fordham and others tomorrow.

Hi all! My dd is a junior and will be applying this fall. USC is her top choice along with all of the other 400 applicants :slight_smile: Anyone on this thread accepted to USC this coming fall?

Hi @grit2018, I’m new to the board and your post on 3/3/18 caught my attention. My dd is a junior and will be apply to BFA programs this fall. We just toured Pace and NYU last week and she liked both. My dd is also coming from a strong competition studio with some extra ballet training. She would love a university that is diverse and not just ballet/modern. Have you heard from any more schools yet?

Thanks everyone for your help and valuable information on San Jose/Palo Alto dance resources!

@Twoin18 So happy for your daughter! Thanks for info on livdancearts.com!
@mom2adancer Will look into New School. Looks good on the website. Thanks!
@Curiosa Cardinal looks like a student company and no formal training. My son did find that the advanced level classes are taught by a teacher he likes. He just needs more classes.

@heidib My son is wait listed at USC and accepted at NYU. NYU Tisch doesn’t offer merit based scholarship and the cost is close to $80K, so we are likely putting down deposit at Stanford. He still wants to go to USC, but we may not find out as late as July…

Anybody hear from Purchase yet? It’s the last one we are waiting for.

@shellys7 My ds has several friends that were admitted to purchase weeks ago.

My daughter didn’t audition until March 3rd and her friend didn’t audition until March 22nd because of a weather make-up, so hmmm that’s interesting.

My daughter made her decision. It was down to Elon and Rutgers for her BFA. She chose Rutgers/Mason-Gross.
Mason-Gross invited her in to the Honors College based on her dance audition. That came with a hefty scholarship. The Honors College showcase was very informative. The dorm is gorgeous. The amenities in the dorm and perks that come with the Honors College are amazing. She is 40 minutes from NYC and and hour from Philly. All on public transportation. She is very excited.

We are not allowed to announce it until she received her Rutgers sweatshirt and posts on her instagram;) I’m a bit sorry to let go of Elon, but we understand her reasons. Very excited for her and happy that we are close enough to watch her performances!

Congrats @amom2girls !

Congrats @amom2girls ! Definitely a big factor for us to be close enough to watch performances!

Congratulations to everyone on acceptances and ultimately, decisions! Our son has narrowed down to four schools: Fordham/Ailey, Chapman, UC Irvine and Cal State Long Beach. Two visits down and two to go. He is currently getting more confused and torn, however, we keep telling him this is a high-class problem (which doesn’t make it any easier). Hope to have visits done and choices narrowed soon.

good luck with that decision @dudedrum! I am not familiar with California programs but I know that they all have a great reputation!

Congrats @amom2girls! Sounds like she made a very informed decision and thought it through thoroughly.

Good luck @dudedrum. Visiting again was a big help for my daughter in narrowing down her choices, even though she had seen them all before. Now that the decision is imminent in their minds, it really helps to go there and try to visualize themselves in that environment. In some cases, it becomes very clear that it doesn’t feel right.
