Dance Auditions and Decisions 2019/2020

@dkm008 would you mind elaborating on why your daughter chose George Mason? We are just starting down the application path and would love to hear your perspective.

FWIW, when I went to college, I chose a less competitive school because it felt like the right fit for me. I’ve never regretted it. Fit is so much more important than prestige or rankings, ESPECIALLY in an artistic field of study.

I think you are asking me this question. Daughter had reservations about Purchase after she accepted. She really enjoyed the audition, the instructors and the facilities. She goes to a high school with more students than Purchase. She’s not a small school kid. If it were a small school in a city it would be ok. She didn’t like the fact that you couldn’t walk anywhere from campus. The campus is pretty, it’s just a bit isolated. She was also concerned about academics. Her other concern was the size of the dance program. Last years freshman class had 60 dancers. They say you may never dance in a main stage piece. I know it’s ranked and many incredible dancers are going there. At the end of the day, she felt she wouldn’t fit the program well.

Her 1st choice is NYU. She did their high school summer program. She was waitlisted there.

She has friends that are older that highly suggested she look at Mason. She loved the audition. It’s a smaller dance program that the university supports greatly. The director and staff are highly accomplished. It is a competitive program to get into. She feels like she will get to dance more in each class because it’s only 20 dancers per grade. We watched class and no dancer had much down time at all. They have 8 full time faculty and they know each dancer personally and will help them find their place in the dance world. Lastly, it has great academics and a real campus feel. It’s a very pretty campus.

Purchase is a fabulous school but it’s not the right place for her. She would do well and be happy at any of these schools. She chose the best fit for her.

Yes, it was you I meant to ask! Thank you so much. This is really helpful information.

FYI there is a “Purchase Class of 2023 Parent & Families” group on FB.

Wondering if anyone on this list applied or auditioned at University of Cincinnati? If so, can you give thoughts on experience, program, school, etc? Looks like a great program and my ballerina is very interested - just haven’t heard or seen too much about it. TIA
