As a current Junior I'm thinking about what types of colleges to apply to as a Dance major. I previously had a large list of schools that were BFA, BA, Conservatory, LAC, but I think I have found what I want now. I mainly looking at schools, with the exception of one or two, that offer both BA and BFA programs (or strong BA programs) and allow a double major or minor in Marketing/Business. After college I would like to choreograph, own a studio, or teach and that's where my question comes. Some of the schools I want to apply to offer Dance Ed majors ( one with a 5 year program where I will get my Masters of education, Mom, a teacher, loves that) or that have concentration in teaching in schools or studio administration. While I know you don't have to be a teacher in order to teach or own a studio, is this something to go into? How many jobs in schools are available if I go into teaching and would it be possible to teach at the college level? Is this realistic and/or a good idea?

The number of jobs available for certified Dance Ed teachers will likely vary from state to state and even school system to school system within a given state.

As far as college teaching goes, some (particularly conservatory) programs have full time dance faculty who do not have MFA (the terminal degree in dance for college teaching) degrees. Many schools, however, require their full time faculty to have completed an MFA.

Is James Madison in your list? Double major is possible and there is a teacher certification program for dance.
