<p>Anyone know of some colleges/universities (other than Wake Forest!) that allow a student to minor in dance? My daughter's career path prep has changed due to an injury that most likely means she cannot major in dance at college. She can, however, do a minor. But it seems that programs that allow a minor are few and far between. Anyone know of some?</p>

<p>Everywhere my dd auditioned also had a dance minor. Many required an audition to even just minor in the program. She attends Slippery Rock University as a dance major and simply loves it. Wonderful program, great school and very affordable. She also looked at Kent State, Ball State and University of Akron.</p>
<p>Hi. My dd has a friend who is going to Princeton and minoring. They dance where the Princeton Ballet train, Muhlenberg have a minor or a double major, Penn State has a new major and has had a minor for awhile, My dd has a friend at George Washington who is double majoring in Dance and international relations. They have a minor as well. Good Luck. If you dig alot of schools have great minors.</p>
<p>College of Charleston has a dance minor that can be combined with any major. They also have some additional opportunities to dance locally if they want more classes.</p>

<p>My d is in the dance minor program at Ball State. It was an auditioned admittance, and she (sophomore now) has been able to take a great variety of high-level classes, as well as some cool performance opportunities. Their dance major just became a BFA this fall, and they have added some faculty, etc. Ball State also has an excellent honors college, if that’s something you’re looking for.</p>
<p>Glad this thread has resurfaced. My d just completed her dance minor at the College of William and Mary, and found it to be a more challenging and enriching program than she initially expected. There is no dance major at the school, and no audition is required to pursue the minor. Placement in technique classes is by audition. The focus is modern, which is offered on 4 levels. Ballet offerings are described as low-intermediate and high-intermediate, but my d felt the top ballet class was a solid intermediate level. </p>
<p>The minor requires technique, choreography, and dance history classes. I seem to remember that my d wrote several short papers each semester, either on dance history topics or analyzing her own and other choreographers’ pieces.</p>
<p>There’s a dance company, Orchesis, which performs two dance concerts annually: the fall concert is choreographed by the faculty, and the spring concert features student choreography. Admission is by audition, and one can be accepted whether or not one declares a dance minor. Several dance minors do not gain admittance each year; the quality of the dancers seems quite good to this laymom. Several of the dancers pursued ballet at pre-pro residential schools.</p>
<p>At the request of the faculty, and by agreement of the company members, none of the Orchesis pieces are available on YouTube, which I think is a shame because they’re very good.</p>
<p>frazzled1, Just out of curiousity, what is your daughter doing with her dance minor degree post-college?</p>
<p>I don’t think she ever planned to do much with it. 
She’s currently pursuing her masters in special education, again at W&M. Her BA was in history. I think she minored in dance because she had always loved dancing and it was her primary EC in high school.</p>
<p>She has thought about ways to incorporate dance elements in her work with kids with autism, so maybe that’s in her future.</p>
<p>Frazzled1, That would be a great use of her skills. My daughter thought for a while of going on to graduate school in Movement Therapy, but I don’t think her interests lie that way anymore.</p>

A somewhat eclectic list that reflects my daughter’s desire to continue dancing but not to major: Muhlenberg, College of Wooster, St. Olaf, Kenyon, Western Washington, University of New Mexico, Dickinson, Hofstra, U Mass Amherst, Mt. Holyoke, and maybe Swarthmore and Ohio Wesleyan but can’t remember on these last two.
I know this is an old thread, however, I will suggest Ohio University to those interested. They have 3 minors, Dance Performance, Dance History, and Dance Somatics. They also offer both a BFA and a BA in dance. With the BA it is possible to double major. If they are exceptional students as well check out Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College.
The thing to be careful with in dance minors is that they often assume students are starting dance so the courses can be pretty basic for someone with considerable dance experience. Also if your child wishes to perform without majoring in dance check for programs that may have a dance company. Most are modern companies but still offer the opportunity to dance often without majoring or minoring in dance. There are larger schools that have no dance majors but have opportunities for dancers like Purdue and Pitt.
Our daughter is minoring in dance at Northern Kentucky, so add NKU to the list!
