Dance

Hi! I've been lurking for a while :D
I am in my first year at my community college, hoping to transfer after general ed into a MT program.

I am a novice at dance. Other than the few years of ballet/jazz I took in kindergarten~, I have not danced, I am as flexible as... wood. I am currently taking ballet at the college, and am hoping to extend it by doing lots of it over the summer (4+ times a week) etc... 19 years old, just starting out.

If I really dedicate myself, will I become a decent? Please be brutally honest. I have until about 3 years before I can transfer/audition. What sort of dance should I take, and in what order, to be most compatible with musical theater? If you can give me some input, that would be awesome. Thanks.

lalamomoland, congratulations for being willing, at age 19, to be willing to go back to "square one" and to tackle the classes/training you are going to need for musical theater. More than a few people your age might say "Well, heck, I am too young to start this now!" and just stumble along. Not you. That says a lot about your dedication and character, I think.
I am sure others who are far more expert in dance than I am will chime in, but I think I am correct in saying that BALLET is the foundation of all dance: the alphabet of physical movement/dance, so to speak. So continue with ballet. If you can, you might also want to take some modern/contemporary and jazz classes and even tap. Yoga and pilates classes might help increase your flexibility. However, if you can only afford the time or money for one kind of dance, it ought to be ballet, I would think. Anyone else here? In any case, best of luck.

definitely ballet! and as for affording classes, if you belong to a local gym, sometimes they have yoga, pilates, stretching, or even beginner dance classes that are included in a membership (this is the case at our local YMCA, not sure about other gyms). Pilates in particular helps with balance and core muscles which are really important, particularly for ballet.

Thank you so much for your encouragement. I've just decided, I'm not going to be one of those people who will say, twenty years later, "I wish I had done that," and push it all on their kids. Okay!! I will continue ballet with vigor!!!!!

kasl24: I did some pilates (from a pilates DVD... lol) and it made me stronger, definitely!!! THank you!!

You gotta love those workout videos :) Good luck and good for you for going full steam ahead with such a challenge!
