@momofsmartdancer Yes, I would say she is probably guessing too early as to where she can apply her academic strengths. I believe this is still a genuine hurdle for most high school students as well as many undergraduates-declaring a major and figuring out a job related direction. Not a lot has changed there since my time in college. And for that, she is looking at a summer internship to truly “understand” the engineering possibilities.
Her strengths are Physics, Chemistry and Math. She has visited many sites on her own to match her strengths with careers-interesting results to say the least. She realizes the commitment to those areas but I’m seeing she isn’t ready to give up ballet. The need to know is strong. The path traditionally becomes divided at very early stages for dancer, as you know. She is very aware that even if she danced professionally, her time is limited-they “retire” young. She is determined to forge a new path and Im trying to assist navigating those unusual approaches.
Deferring maybe a route, but the post @doschicos mentions a good point,…deferring and the impact on scholarships. New thought (thank you and this is why I love this site, so many eyes viewing from different angles)! …“a brain is a terrible thing to waste.” With that said, I respect her passion for ballet and must support her dream to reach for both.
