Knowing that Sylvanus Thayer (a Dartmouth alumnus) founded both West Point’s and Dartmouth’s engineering programs, why is it that West Point seems to be favoured in engineering rankings. What is it like to study engineering at Thayer? Also, how strong is Dartmouth’s mathematics department. I am interested in studying applied math. Thank you!
The schools have two very different objectives. WP is all about practically training the individual for life as an army officer. It is a “ hit the ground running” program. That is a hugely valuable skill in industry, especially when paired with the discipline learned in that environment. I think the difference is due to the school objectives rather then the person that founded the programs. Neither has mass appeal.
