My son also got this letter. I think they want more applicants that they can reject to make their acceptance rate lower.

APPS for 2013 -Reported figures for Dartmouth ED (-12.5%) Decline is significant since other Ivies are showing increase is applicant pool for ED.
Ivy wannabes: SEND IN YOUR APPS BY JAN 15 which is the extended deadline!

I read another CC post recently from a few years ago with a similar question, and one member suggested it may have something to do with minorities. I recieved an extension letter from Dartmouth this December, and I’m Hispanic. Are any of you classified as a minority? Just wondering.

From what I have heard, I think that ChristinaF15 is correct. They have specifically said ‘for you’ which likely means it is a targeted mailing.

“Are any of you classified as a minority”

I got one, and I’m Asian… weird, because I wouldn’t think they’d ever target Asians. If it is for minorities.

Considering the quirky punctuation, I think CantConcentrate’s analysis is correct - notice how they have used commas to highlight the “for you” (make you pause slightly there when reading), hence they try to make you think you have a better chance.
Other schools have done this (lesser known small libarts) but none of the Ivies.

I’m an URM too and I got one. I only assumed it was targeted because of the “for you” part, but hearing the whole “they want more applicants to reject” theory is making me nervous… I was going to apply anyways so it wasn’t really a big difference, especially since Dartmouth doesn’t have supplement essays or anything. I’m just going to assume it’s a good sign though :D

We got letter and we are not URM
