My ds has visited both schools and does like both. (I know they are different -but he appreciates the strong points each offers). Where they are they same is that at both schools the students love their school, and enjoy the undergraduate experience. This is very important to him, after a long grind in high school.

He applied for engineering, but is still thinking about physics - or other possible STEM majors.

How is dartmouth for eng, science research? Does it stack up against other more tech schools like JHU?

How much do frats rule? Are there frats that are not the standard athletic frat? Not really the outdoors type but he loved the campus.

I can’t speak to Dartmouth engineering, but I can tell you about Greek life.

Greek life does dominate. However, because such a massive percentage of students are affiliated, the fraternities and sororities include a number of students who probably wouldn’t be affiliated at other schools. In addition to the standard athletic fraternities, there are also crunchy outdoors-y type houses, houses that are part of a more alternative scene, houses with a Capella singers and theater majors, and houses whose membership is a more mixed groups of guys with very diverse interests. If he does come to Dartmouth, he’ll have a year to get a feel for the houses and decide if he does want to rush.

And I’m with your son, I’m not outdoorsy but I love the campus. Like your son, I also loved both Brown and Dartmouth. Whichever he chooses, I’m sure he’ll have a great 4 years.
