Hi. I am trying to decide between these two schools. They seem like apples and oranges, but they are both similar in the fact that they have strong focuses on undergraduates and have strong senses of community. If given the option, which school would you choose and why?

P.S. I've posted this in a few forums because I want to hear as many opinions as possible. I'm so torn!

Dartmouth’s got a number of problems these days with the administration, changing times, etc. Rice has a ton of money (second highest endowment/student after Princeton) to spend on undergrads, and for engineering, it’s a no-brainer. I’d say to go with Rice, but I guess I’m biased.

Both are great schools! Congrats! If you want more of a frat scene- pick Dart. And if you want to have to go to school at least one summer, pick Dart. If you want a res college scene, pick Rice. If you want a school thats easy to get to (eg airport access) pick Rice. What do you want to major in?

Engineering, and I know Rice’s is terrific…but I don’t want that to determine where I go to school. I want to hear more about people’s experiences at the various schools, overall.

Just take a look at some posts on Dartblog and articles in The D. The Dartmouth campus is very divided over their new president. Some are even calling for him to resign. Also Dartmouth’s budget issues are still pretty bad it seems – worse than Rice’s, as President Leebron just announced a slight pay raise, removed the hiring freeze, and promised no spending cuts for the next year. Rice’s endowment is also significantly larger than Dartmouth’s, so perhaps we were impacted less by the financial mess.

My daughter had the same choice two years ago. Rice is a fine school, but she picked Dartmouth and loves it. I guess she preferred a tiny, cold town over a huge, hot, and humid city. Your preference may be the opposite.
