Data Retieval Tool being asked to enter amount that your parents each earned from working in 2013

I'm getting this error and unable to continue to sign until It's filled in.
Anyone else have to do this?

Is this happening before you can even access the DRT or after but before you can sign and submit? The DRT can’t determine from the tax return how much each parent earned from work so they have to be filled in manually.

It’s happening after the tool but before I can sign. I’m afraid to enter anything because I didn’t think it was necessary to add ANYTHING after accessing the info from the IRS.
So I should fill it in?

Yes, there are only certain fields the DRT can determine from a tax return. If it had been able to populate the parents income from work field it would have done so and wouldn’t require you to do it manually. There are other questions on the fafsa that can’t be transferred too. I think there is an ‘update history’ feature you can click on in fafsa and it will show you the latest changes made and I believe the changes from the DRT will be marked ‘transferred from the IRS’ or similar for the questions the DRT updated. Those are the only ones the DRT can transfer.

Thank you!!! I was able to successfully sign my linked FAFSA after breaking down the parental income. I am so paranoid to screw it up that I needed some hand holding before doing so. Thanks again.

Adding the parent income earned from work does not constitute a change to the IRS DRT information. This is because, as was correctly pointed out, it is a not a data item that can be transferred in the DRT process. Only if you change a value that can be transferred will it trigger a code for the aid officer indicating that the values transferred in the DRT process were changed (yes, there is a code for that, and aid officers watch for it - you will have to submit a tax transcript if you change the values transferred in the DRT process).

Thank you for further clarifying.
I’m glad to have my FAFSA completely done at this point. And now the waiting for the award letters begins…
