I would appreciate any suggestions of music programs for my daughter who is currently a HS junior. She loves poo, jazz, soul anything but a classical bent. Open to a conservatory but I think a good program within a larger university might be better so she could maybe do some acting as well. She’s quite a gifted singer and actress (granted I’m her mom) but only a 3.0 GPA. She enjoyed the berklee school of music summer program last summer. Thank you!
How about Indiana?
-Do you have a budget?
-Geographic preferences?
Budget is very flexible. She’d like to go warm (we’re currently in New England), also would like to be in or near a large city. Like LMU but not sure she could get in grade wise and also now thinking she might like to stay a little closer to home (east coast) her first year, but please suggest everything! Boston would be great, manhattan…
-Baylor University
-College of Charleston
-Georgia State University
-Temple University
-University of Cincinnati
My sister has the same interests; she’s now a student at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. She also applied to Berklee, as well as a couple other less well-known schools, most of which I forget. I think Muhlenberg was one of them.
Moving to music forum
I had to do a double take with “poo”-- I thought, I’m definitely getting old; there’s another new style of music I haven’t heard of! But seriously, for a student with those interests, many many liberal arts schools could be a wonderful environment/incubator. I’m thinking Bard College or Bennington would be great, but they are a bit far from the city. Sarah Lawrence is another great possibility–and they are very close to NYC. For Manhattan, I’d look at NYU, or even Fordham Lincoln Center (the arts campus, which has a great theater program where she could meet other performance-focused kids.) So many great options out there.
In NYC, the New School has a great jazz program, I don’t know how it is for vocal music, but they may fit the bill.
So, what is “poo”?
I think it’s just a typo for “pop”. Or maybe it IS a new style.
And I googled “poo music” (it wouldnt have been the first popular culture phenomenon to pass me by) :">
mumkee, based on what you have shared, I would highly suggest Belmont in Nashville. Sounds like it could be a very strong fit. Beautiful campus. Nashville is a great city for college kids.
But, do they have a good poo music department? OK, couldn’t resist.
I so appreciate all of these comments and haha sorry for the typo!
I I will check out the New School as well! So difficult to find the time what with them being in school all week!
How does your sister like Belmont? Where are you from? Did she get into Berklee?
Oh yes, and Eugene Lang College of the New School, I almost forgot, if she wants a liberal arts education.
@mumkee my sister likes it a lot; she’s able to fit in two concentrations within her Contemporary Voice major and the coursework is keeping her very busy (to the point where she complains about the amount of work but isn’t being wholly crushed by it). We’re from Seattle, but she seems to have taken the change pretty well. She’s into transportation by car and meat much more than I am so those may be reasons for the ease of adoption, at least in the sense that she’s adapting to the place more that I would have.
She did not get into Berklee, I think.
Its a little old (Sep 2014) but here’s a great place to start. Billboard Magazine published a list of the top schools to study the Music Indistry (http://www.billboard.com/articles/business/6259155/top-music-business-schools-colleges-programs)
Some great programs that aren’t on the list are:
Loyola New Orleans
University of Memphis
McNally Smith (Minneapolis)
Columbia College of Chicago
University of the Arts
SUNY Purchase (more Jazz and Musical Theatre)
Drexel University
Catawba College (in very suburban Charlotte, NC)
UMass Lowell
My D is a Senior, also from New England, loves to sing and wants to go to school in an urban area. She’s in the throes of audition season now for her chosen schools and will be making her decision in the next few months. The University of Colorado Denver has a fantastic Music Industry summer program that’s more bang for the buck (2 weeks for the price of a Berklee weekend) than Berklee that my D did last year and loved. She’d done Berklee a couple of summers before.
We looked a lot of schools and you can read my thread on Music Business and Contemporary programs here if you like. (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1666721-contemporary-vocal-performance-and-music-business-programs-p1.html)
