Hey--
I have a question about the Davidson competition- what constitutes a "substantial piece of work"? is there a unofficial page length if it is an essay? those sorts of questions...thanks!

Um, well, have you looked at the requirements?

If you're applying for literature, which it sounds like from your mentioning an essay, you have to submit a 60-75 page portfolio with writing from 3 of four categories (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, screenplay/dramatic script). After that you have 5 additional essays you have to write about your work and a video of yourself describing it.

As for what a "substantial piece of work" is, I don't really know (and I applied this year!) They don't give out samples from past winners. You do have to write essays about the potential benefit to society of your piece and the significance of your work.

It's a lot more involved than just writing an essay, sorry to say.

im doing out of the box, probably. no need to be sorry...
