a recent study I read suggested that the freshman fifteen weight gain is not that accurate. it’s more like 4 to 7 pounds on average at the end of the first year.

100% need AND offers merit AND is the most diverse school in the US, with roughly 12% Asian, 8% African American, 11% Hispanic/Latino, 4% multiracial, 25% international students.
It’s also quite “middle of the road” politically compared to, say, Smith or Mills. The big issue they defend is diversity.

thanks, MYOS. I wish I’d been allowed to look at it.

Haven’t posted here for a couple of yeas, as my daughter was accepted to Tulane, got a pretty decent scholarship ($17k for 4 years), but now I have another HS senior daughter so I’m lurking again! I just had to chime in to tell you that my D loves Tulane - she is a junior now. She is in the honors program and is an English major, but is taking all kinds of other LA classes that she just loves. She plans on going to law school, but will likely take their offer of a 5th year masters degree in English (at 1/3 the normal tuition cost - we like that!). Tulane does have many very bright kids who just missed, for whatever reason, getting into Ivies, or financing their education there. I think your D definitely has a shot at the Dean’s Honors or Paul Tulane scholarships, especially if she is creative and puts together a clever project. My younger D is applying EA now and Tulane is definitely in her top 3. I’m a grad of Cornell Law School and I often joke that if I had known about Tulane back then, I would have gone there instead. You cannot beat the weather - the food - the architecture - the music - we have become huge fans of New Orleans! It is spectacular - and we are from South Florida. Anyway, GOOD LUCK & keep us posted!

So glad your daughter is happy at Tulane, @wpbmom. Good luck to you and your senior daughter, too. :)

Got a private message for an update so I thought I’d post here since many were so helpful. She has visited all of the schools and would be happy at any of them. Great schools in urban areas that aren’t colder than MD…

Right now she has applied EA to
University of MD
Tulane
Rhodes She hasn’t heard back from any of them.

She’s applied RD to:
Wash U in St. Louis (a high reach…)
Emory (reachy, too)

Will apply to Rice (reach), American, and Occidental. Worried we don’t have a solid safety + merit in there… With this polar vortex hitting hard she’s really digging in about not moving somewhere more north than MD. Keep hoping that an undiscovered good school, with good merit, in a warm climate will magically pop on my radar…

Have you guys looked at Miami University (Ohio)? It will probably be around the same temps as Maryland, but they offer some nice merit scholarships and she may qualify for full tuition there. <a href=“Scholarships | Costs and Financial Aid | Miami University”>Scholarships | Costs and Financial Aid | Miami University;

Miami and Maryland will not have the same temps.

Thank you for the update! :)

This thread might give you some ideas.

<a href=“Southern LACs - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1671635-southern-lacs-p1.html

A tip that I was given and have used in the college search was to pick a handful of schools in the high safety/low match realm that have honors programs and give good merit aid. For one, some of these schools are closer to the $50K mark than the $60K mark, already reducing costs by $10K. D has similar stats to your daughter (well, her GPA is higher, her SAT lower, but in the end pretty similar I think…). She looked at all the NE LACs and will apply to Smith and MHC, Wellesly and a few others but the ones we are really counting on are the ones where she is in the top 10% of applicants: University of Scranton, St. Michaels and a couple others. In the end, the choice is anything under the state flagship price of $25K. That’s the ceiling I’ve proposed, hopefully we’ll be able to stick to it lol.

OP, you mentioned Baltimore. If your daughter attends a Baltimore City public school, she is eligible for free tuition at Johns Hopkins. Just a thought.

@leftofPisa we live .5 miles from the city. :((

How many do they admit from Baltimore with free tuition?

@texaspg, JHU says that 100 students have enrolled through the program since it began in 2005. There is no separate application and need is not a factor; if you are accepted to JHU and meet the criteria, tuition is waived. https://apply.jhu.edu/finaid/baltimorescholars/

It’s a pretty amazing opportunity.

Sorry @gettingaclue, so near and yet so far. I am sure your D will have great choices.

@leftofpisa sounds like they average 10 per year.

Her extracurriculars are stronger than you might think. Just reading your description it sounds like she pursues activities she is genuinely interested in vs. what will look good on an application. Consider describing them in a way that her genuine passion shows. Your income puts you above great financial aid but probably below money is no object- the unhappy middle ground and it’s late in the game. Your daughter’s profile is probably very attractive to a number of schools focused on their USNews ranking with generous merit aid. Basically what she needs to do is send out a lot of applications to colleges that are artsy and generous. If it helps, my daughter is actually applying to U.Maryland College Park with a 36 ACT and we are from Illinois - your state school is very good and on the way up

OP Update: She was accepted EA to Tulane yesterday!! Whew. Worried that they might think she was using them as a safety and she might have been deferred. Irrational worries and speculation these past few weeks…

Awaiting merit aid letter. She’s submitted the Dean’s Honor Merit app and has been working on her creative project for Paul Tulane on and off for a month - must submit this weekend (!!) but she keeps tweaking it. Long shot b/c she’s top 7% not top 5 and GPA is a little low, but you can’t get it if you don’t try.

Best wishes to all who are in the throes of the acceptance/deferral/denied process.

Thank you for the update!

yes, keep us informed. congrats on Tulane. it’s a very good school. if you have any questions about it, the Tulane forum is very helpful.
