I've always wondered is it "acceptable" to talk about death in your college essay or any type of application essay in general?

Personally, I've seen a multiple car crash accident occur in front of me and it's inspired me and affected me (suffered from anxiety/mild depression; subsequent drop in GPA) and shaped how I view the world and what career I want to pursue.

I would say this is a good topic because it is distinctive, genuinely important to you, and both personal and related to your career goals. Try not to be super melodramatic about it, and remember to focus on helping the reader get to know you as a person, not just as a witness to a tragedy. It sounds like you already have the right idea in this regard.

I’m not sure about this. It is not taboo, no. It really depends on how you are writing it. I don’t like it as working a ‘why my gpa dropped’ angle essay, that really puts a tiresome spin on any story of introspection, epiphany or worldview explanation. .

This could work in the “Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family” but you would have to approach it from the right angle.
