Debate at CMC

I'm a debater from Southern California who would really like to go to CMC and I was wondering if because CMC has a great parliament team how much being a debater helps in the admissions process. Do they treat it like any other extra curricular or do they give you extra "points" for it? Do they recruit debaters like other schools would recruit players on sports teams? I'm asking because I want to know how much time I should put into debate verses my other extra curricular obligations if I am aiming to go to CMC. Thanks for any input

I think the admissions committee likes debaters, but not so much to recruit them for the team. I think they know the sort of qualities debate develops in HS students, and they want those qualities in a CMCer.

First, don't do anything just with the intent of having it get you into a school. Second, I do parli debate in HS and am going to CMC next year. I have met with the coaches at CMC. I do not know to what degree this helped me, but it didn't hurt! So if you are really interested in debating at CMC, send the coaches an email. Or meet them personally. They have a parli camp over the summer. Additionally, I dunno if you are going to the parli nats tournament (next weekend) but you could talk to them then. It definitely won't hurt!

Thanks Brandon and Blonde Deception:
And in response to response two I'm not.. I love Parliament in fact I love it so much I devote a lot of spare time to its study.. and am debating whether or not to do leadership next year as well (as well as continuing to be an editor in journalism and such), and this is kind of a factor, if being really good at debate is "enough." (as if anything is enough for college) In other words what I will be trying to focus on most for the next two years. Yeah I am going next week which is also kind of why I asked.. To see if I should try to contact a coach while there. Thanks for telling me about the camp too

Ya, definitely talk to John Meany or Kate Shuster. Also, talking to the judges who go to CMC could help you out as well. See you there!

hi,
you should do what you want to do and are passionate about. i don't think any college wants 'joiners', but it's definately great to diversify your interests, as a human being. a lot of students did debate in HS (countless people in the NFL, i didn't do it till i got here) but not all of them are hardcore debaters. they don't recruit debaters like they do sports players. CMC admissions may secretly use a point system on the basis of activity, but I'm pretty sure that the idea is to wholistically evaluate applicants on the basis of them being a 'good fit'. student government seems to fit in with the leadership profile, but so would being captain of your debate team.
