So yeah, I'm doing LD debate all 4 years of college, and could be captain next year (I'm a rising junior). I was wondering how good you have to be to get good EC points for doing it. I mean, in the debate world you can be very good without winning a lot of tournaments or whatnot but I'm not sure if colleges know that.

being an NFL qualifier is important i guess, thats prolly the biggest acheivement thats notable for skools, also maybe being a state champion would help. but youre right individual tournaments arent too significant.

Well, I mean you can do well at tournaments like Stanford or whatnot and there's TOC and such. Any of that help or do you have to do NFL/League stuff since I like spreading...

I am also an LD debater entering my 4th year of HS. As I understand it, each year you take debate helps a little bit because it shows dedication to an activity. Additionally, you can set yourself apart by qualifying for NFL nats, the TOC, your state tournament (prestige based on size of state), or becoming an officer at your school (obviously the higher up the food chain the better e.g. president/captain > secretary).

I see. Does doing debate in your senior year help since apps are sent near the beginning?

my brother had pretty average grades (3.7 gpa) a good act (33) but he went to nationals in debate and he got into the honors college at U of michigan

Just doing debate is enough to give you a boost. It is a very useful EC to have, no matter what level you do it at.

Here, read this: http://victorybriefs.com/debate-and-college-admissions.html . Also, sometimes it helps if you have the NFL All American award in addition to qualing for NFLs / TOC.

Yeah you really don't need to list every local tourney you've won...I actually cut out four years' worth of those and just put down the most important things I'd won (state and nat'l awards plus school officer position)...another one of my friends who didn't break at states/qual to NFLs just put down "state qualifier, nat'l tournament 1st alternate" and was just fine. So you can definitely condense it...probably easier on the admissions officers lol.
