December 16: do apartments close at the same time as dorms?

The USC Housing website says: Winter Break begins December 16. Residents of suite-style buildings and residence halls must vacate their assignments by 5pm and may return at 8:30am, January 7.

Does anyone know if Century Apartments qualify as a "suite-style building"?

I have a slight rant. We always schedule flights home so that there's no racing-to-the-airport panic right after a final ends at 5 p.m. on the last day of finals. In other words, S waits and flies home the next morning. What makes USC think it's a good idea to evict students at 5 p.m. on the last day of finals? Not everyone can just jump in the Beamer and drive home that night! This was also a huge problem at the end of the year last year - kids are off taking finals while their suitemates are trying to get moved out of the room by the deadline. I just don't understand why that deadline can't be the morning after finals end.

If you’re in an apartment, you do not have to leave during any of the breaks. Only dorms and suites are required to leave (ie mainly the freshmen dorms- New/North, Birnkrant, Parkside, etc). Also, if you have a final that runs late, you can get an extension to leave later in the day (I didn’t move out until 8 or 9 pm last year), free of charge. You can stay a few days later as well if your flight leaves later (I think for up to a week or something), but USC charges you each night you stay.

The apartments run by SC (eg, Troy) follow the regular housing rules; you need to be out by 5:00 on Wednesday, unless you get an exemption (such as your final isn’t over until 6!)

Unless things have changed this year from past years, those students who live in USC owned apartments (like Century, Troy and Troy East) off campus do not need to vacate over breaks. My S. lived in Troy East last year and he did not have to be out. He lives in Century this year, and as far as he knows its the same policy as last year.

Thanks everyone! It appears there’s conflicting information, which I will make my son resolve. But thanks for permitting my rant anyway. It just strikes me as one of the more stupid policies I’ve encountered.

Pull directly from the USC Housing website:

“Will residents of undergraduate apartments have to move out during Winter Break?
No - the switch will not affect the ability of apartment residents to stay in their housing assignments over the Winter Break.”

(The switch is in regards to the switch in their billing system from a monthly system to a semester system)

So yes, residents of USC APARTMENTS are allowed to stay over winter break. However, if you’re in a dorm, you’ll have to request an extension.

as an RA in university apartments i can say with confidence that kathyc is mistaken. akalboy is correct–apartments are open for the entirety of winter break.

ps: suite-style housing refers to parkside international, parkside arts&humanities, and fluor.

Again, thanks. I wasn’t able to find that info on the web, and you’ve all been a big help!

Re #7–just reporting what I heard from my daughter, who said she has to get a waiver.
