Decided to attend

Hi, I have decided to attend Baylor. I was wondering if anyone else has enrolled. Everything I have read about Baylor makes me even more certain. I would like to hear from some current students or parents of students to get a little more insight on what it is like on campus and in transfering from high school to college. Some people say it is a lot more work and some say that it isnt much more than high school. Also, does anyone have any info on what the dorms are like for freshman/ where do you eat meals. And, how often is the Lariat published, from the archives on the website it appears to be a daily for Tues-Fri but Im not sure?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Hey there, future Bear. The dorms are nice, though I haven't been in all of them. You can look here for some pics and stuff from different dorms. http://www.baylor.edu/housing/index.php?id=1100

You can eat off campus at the fast food places which are conviently right off campus and along the highway. Or since you have to buy the mandatory meal plans, you can eat at the dining halls. There's three dining halls and have a variety, but I think like each college, you can get tired pretty quickly if you eat at the same place everyday.

It's the largest Baptist university, so obviously there's gonna be emphasis on religion, but personally I don't feel they force it down our throats. You do have to attend chapel, which is pretty much 50 minutes of lecture or presentation...most people just take advantage of the 8 absences you can have for it and use it. You get no credit for it and it just takes up time in your schedule.

Lariat's out every Tuesday through Thursday.

There's more info in the other thread on this board.

Thanks. Do you know what the dorms are like for freshman- which ones are the quieter ones. The majors I am doing will need a lot of study time so the quieter my surrondings the better. How do frats and sorts work, since they dont have their own housing. I am not interested in joining one and I am wondering how prevelant it is on campus, is there enough other events to be involved in if you arent into the Greek life?

Not really sure if there are quiet dorms and loud dorms. If you have a good roomate that will respect you, you can get some studying done. There's always the library or the science building where you can get your studies done as well as very quiet study rooms in Memorial and Alexander which are honors dorms.

I believe you can rush for frats and stuff after your first semester. And I think there's plenty to do on campus like from intramurals to clubs to just hanging out with friends. Waco's pretty boring though.

is baylor pretty diverse?

42% male, 58% female,

1% American Indian

5% Asian

6% black

8% Hispanic

78% white

1% international

is it diverse?

not really. in terms of race, it mostly white. and in terms of personality, most students seem to be pretty preppy, from what i've experienced.

Since my daughter is NOT preppy, I hope she can find other friends on campus if she ends up at Baylor. I have also heard that the girls tend to dress up more than at your average campus. She doesn't dress up very much and she's never been the type to worry a great deal about labels or designers. Thrift store is her style.

I'm still trying to figure out why she likes Baylor so much. I guess it's because she has a lot of Baptist friends. And Baylor has offered such good scholarships. I hope the education is as good as the scholarships.

She likes to go to concerts and I don't think there are a lot of those in Waco. I guess she figures she'll just drive to Austin or Dallas whenever she wants to experience big city life. I have to admit, Waco is closer to the big concerts than our hometown.

I heard from one Baylor mom that her daughter was able to maintain a 3.8 average even though she rarely went to class. So I don't know if that means that her daughter is really smart or the classes are really easy.

Lots of Baylor graduates that my daughter talked to were happy overall with the Baylor experience. But I have heard from a few who transferred out after their first year. I don't really have a good picture as to why they left.

I dunno about the whole preppy thing. There are gonna be many different groups that she'll hang out with. It's not like everyone's stuck up or something. Sure, a lot of the students I know come from pretty good incomed families, but it doesn't mean that they're all conceited.

I think Baylor has gotten more diverse, I don't have stats or anything, but I think '08 was the most diverse...not sure, though. I think it's one of the things they tout around here.

And plus, Baylor has a 75% attendance policy...so I guess that girl who got the 3.8 had teachers that didn't take attendance.

Congrats on knowing where your going collegebound09. I still deciding b/w Baylor and Tulane. Its so hard to choose b.w 2 great schools.

hi there! well i just got a baylor acceptance letter today... im not sure whether im gonna go or not... whats your advice? go to baylor and experience college outside of my community or go to a university 15 min. away from home on a full scholarship

my son sent in his application on December 1 and hasn't heard anything. Does anyone know how long it takes to get an acceptance? He applied to EA to two other schools and heard from both of them before February 1. Baylor is his safety school so I am surprised it is taking this long.

doglover1585- that is weird because baylor is usually prompt in making decisions and letting you know about it. It is probably because dec is usually when all the applications come in so you might want to check with them about it though. What other schools is you son applying to?
macantu- IN my personal opinion, college is a time to step away from your protective bubble. But then again I would like a free education. What school gave yo a full scholarship?

university of texas pan-american

Well, I would choose Baylor over UTPan Am if you can afford it. You'd be up near Austin and Dallas but still within a a drivable distance to home for holidays and long weekends. A full scholarship is hard to pass up though.

Baylor gives some good scholarships for merit and helps 75% of it's applicants with financial aid. Have you checked Baylor's website? They have a nice merit aid calculator on line. Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

For anyone considering Baylor, I'll tell you that my son is a freshman there now, and he LOVES it! When he calls home, he goes into detail about how great his profs are, how much he loves his classes (well, last semester he had 2 classes that he really didn't like--so it's not perfect!). He has made great friends there, and definitely enjoying the social aspect of college too. Now Waco may not be the most exciting town you'll ever see, but if you're a person who can make your own fun (like my son) you'll have a great time.
Someone said something about the students being preppy--well, I think there are a lot of rich kids there--my son's not one of 'em! He's very down to earth, not into drinking, and has certainly found a place to fit in there. He says it's pretty diverse in terms of the kind of people there: Christians, Hindus, atheists, party-ers, brainy, greek, non-greek, etc. He thinks most of the people are quite friendly, and thinks the world of his new friends there. A lot of his friends there are from Dallas or Austin (we live 1000 miles away) so they take him home with them on weekends and he gets to see other parts of Texas. A group of them camped on the beach at Mustang Island (off the coast) for the weekend recently. This weekend (well, they skipped classes Thurs and Fri to make a long weekend) a group of them drove to Colorado to go skiing (yeah, that was a long drive!!) So, he truly is having a great time.
And Baylor was very generous with scholarships. Between the merit schol's Baylor gave him, plus a few small outside schol's, his college is totally paid for.
BTW, another student from his highschool is also a freshman at Baylor this year--she also loves it!

Thank you, dolce for the glowing review of Baylor. My daughter has been accepted and is seriously considering attending. It's very nice for me, the mom, to hear good reviews. She has been accepted to UTAustin also and has two other applications pending. I'm thinking of sending in the rather large housing deposit to Baylor soon. They tell me that it's refundable.

Baylor has been very generous with merit offers. We're still waiting to hear about her National Merit status. If she makes finalist then financing her college education would be easy indeed at Baylor. Maybe she'll meet your son. He sounds like her type of friend.

I found a website that rates college professors and Baylor's professors are all in there with comments from their students. Maybe your son could take a look at it. I take what I find with a grain of salt, but the information is very interesting. ----- I think the site is Ratemyprofessors ( uh, .com???)

I was admitted to Baylor as well. For anyone wondering about their chances who is just not posting, my SAT was 1240 and my GPA was 3.57 weighted. I dont know what it is unweighted. My schedule was always PRETTY rigorous, but I only took two ap classes total. Finally, I had TONS of extracirriculars and a great essay. Hope that helps for people wondering about that!!!

I am debating between Baylor (offering me 3,500 per year), Wheaton College in IL (Harvard of Christian schools basically...which i haven't even been accepted to yet and maybe wont be), University of Oklahoma (I love Oklahoma), and Messiah College in PA (5,000 per year in scholarship). Any suggestoins? I'm from Connecticut btw.

I found out about my acceptance within like a month. It didn't take long at all. :)

Baylor really seems like a nice mix between University of Oklahoma, Messiah, and Wheaton. It has positive qualities of all three, so i think thats why i may pick baylor.

wow baylor does offer pretty good scholarship money based on merit alone. i got a 1330 on SAT and theyre offering $36,000 for 8 semesters. this is making my decision pretty tough!

Dolce...Mustang Island and Colorado? I think I know who you're talking about. I live on the same floor as him...what a small internet world...
