Hi All: Looking for your input for a city boy wh acceptances to these four colleges. He is interested in social sciences robotics, history… he is focused on Muhlenberg but I want to make sure he makes the decision from a position of strength. Solid financial aid from all so nothing to choose between there.
Your input, please?
Clark is a very underrated school imho. It has a city location and science and humanities vibe. Holy cross wpi and assumption are all very close. Boston not so far. It has more of a mini university feel than the liberal arts colleges you listed. It’s not in the greatest neighborhood but your son is a city kid. It’s not Chicago or Philly. It’s a small city having a bit of rebirth with the new Red Sox aaa team and stadium opening this year.
I know Wheaton really well it is in Norton mass. It’s really a good school. It was a women’s college up through the 90s. But it’s not rural or city. It’s near Attleboro and Brockton. Nothing happening there.
Muhlenberg is more rural and a real traditional LAC. Beautiful campus and solid reputation. PA vs Mass.
I don’t know anything about Goucher except what I’ve learned here. And it seems to a really nice school and people recommend it often.
If one had to choose based on your inquiry. And the tiny bit of info I would make it a decision of Clark vs Muhlenberg.
Traditional rural LAC vs a more urban mini Uni.
Clark would probably be considered to have a little more of the science and robotics vibe. But history and other humanities they would be peers. Perhaps even a lean towards Muhlenberg.
When we looked at LACs with my D we found that they all had a particular vibe. Muhlenberg is a great school and I would say if that one "speaks to/connects with him the most and finances are not an issue then I’d go with Muhlenberg. If there is any doubt then visit his top couple of choices during accepted students day.
@happy1 great advice right there OP
I would not consider Allentown rural. It is a small city.
I am pretty sure you’ve been to both campuses. I was comparing the two. So it was just a general feel.
Clark uni and Muhlenberg was the comparison. The op is a city kid.
Clark is urban. Muhlenberg is not imho. That’s the only comparison I was making. It’s more rural than Clark and the surrounding region as well.
But point taken.
Was anything in the post valid? It’s just my opinion.
@privatebanker - Yes, sorry- I was not intending to be overly critical of your helpful post. So sorry if it sounded rude. I was just clarifying about Allentown.
@TheGreyKing Thanks. No worries.
I just wanted to make sure the other parts sounded ok for the op and to make sure you knew I was only comparing them to each other.
@writermomma,
How much your “city” son would want to be in a city environment?
Clark is in Worcester, the second largest city in New England (second to Boston). The only downside of Clark is that it is in a non-desirable part of the city called Main South. However, the city is being revitalized and things have changed to a more positive trend. Worcester Sox (Red Sox minor league baseball) will be opened its stadium in 2021. Most are excited about it.
I have several friends and colleagues graduated from Clark. They have spoken highly about the education and their college experience there. It is a very good, small liberal arts college. When I said small, it is quite small in size. Would you son mind that?
Wheaton College in Norton is located in a town vs a city. But it is not a rural area. I don’t call any town in Eastern MA rural anyway.
My S is deciding between a few schools right now, one of them Goucher. He really likes the academics, location, nice campus with relatively easy access to Towson U & Johns Hopkins.
Muhlenberg is in Allentown, PA, which is the third largest city in Pennsylvania. It’s suburban, not at all rural.
They all seem relatively comparable in terms of academics. I’d go with the vibe. Have you visited? Which does your kid think he feels most at home at?
