Why is it that some people have already received their honors decisions and some have not? I called admissions about a week ago and they told me that they would be mailing honors letters Feb 15

I dont know exactly if I’m committed…it kinda depends on the scholarship package I would get from USC. And it’s weird that I got my honors acceptance letter in december, there are people with better stats who haven’t received their letters yet.

Did everyone here apply EA? I applied the end of November and had all of my materials sent in December. Does anyone know when RD decisions are to come out?

March 15, 2010: Priority Application Decision Week Begins
Decisions will be released during the week of March 15 for students who applied by December 1 and who also meet the February 1 Credentials deadline.

From the South Carolina admissions website. I believe that anyone who missed the Dec 1 deadline will be admitted on a space-available basis

ladygaga - the honors decisions are mailed on a rolling basis… they send them out in different batches depending on when you applied… all i know is that a batch was sent out the week before christmas and that decisions will be released no later than feb 15, but you may hear back sooner. good luck!

aromy- all students who qualify for ‘named’ scholarships, such as the McNair or the McKissick, receive the monetary deduction of that scholarship on top of a reduced tuition rate that is about equal to what in-state students pay. Although there are other ways to receive in-state tuition, this is the most discussed- on this forum at least.

kaylala- thank you, that’s what i’ve been hearing around this site but I was confused when the woman I spoke to at admissions said they would be mailed Feb 15. I guess its all down to a few weeks by now though so it doesn’t really matter when I get my letter as long as I do in fact get it haha.

Thanks knights09, i was beginning to give up hope. I realize my sat scores are on the low end of honors and high end for capstone but was really hoping for honors. i am graduating top 10% from a competitive NOVA high school with close to 20 hours of ap credit and really want to go to USC. Visited VT and UVA and though I love both, its too cold for me here. However, I can’t go to USC without the out of state tuition waiver!

ladygaga- what kind of grades do you need to get those scholarships? i’m out-of-state and really need some money taken off the tuition… anything you know I can do?

My D is now a second semester senior at SC. She was awarded a McKissick Scholarship and named a Capstone Scholar as well. Her tuition is reduced to actual instate level and then the McKissick award is applied to that amount.

Those who qualify for “named” scholarships like McKissick and McNair also get their tuition reduced to the actual in state tuition level before reducing it further by the name scholarship monies. Others can qualify for reduced tuition that is somewhere between OOS and instate level based on the amount of their merit award.

Incidentally, there are also departmental awards but interestingly, SC usually waits to award them until AFTER you have accepted admission rather than using them to be a deal maker. Their thought I guess is to give them to be people who really want to be there. My D was called by her chosen major department during her HS commencement practice and told that she had been awarded a $6K Coca Cola scholarship on top of everything else.

Be patient…they are generous with merit monies if you have earned them.

PS:

It doesn’t hurt to let them know you really want to be there and that merit $$$ would be a factor in the decision.

Good info on the scholarships. Yes, this is basically how the scholarships are awarded.
Last year my older daughter received her honors letter in Dec. with her acceptance
letter. Last year the McNair letters were sent out the last week of January. The other
general scholarships were sent out the end of the first week of March. My daughter
received a Cooper scholarship, with in state tuition plus $4,000. The McKissick is also
in state tuition plus $2000. The Woodrow scholarship gives reduced tuition ( this year
was about $13,000, in between in state and out of state tuition ) plus $500. I forgot
the Alumni Scholarship. It is in state tuition plus $5000. These are for out of state students.
The in state scholarships are named somewhat differently, with different monetary benefits

My daughter did not end up going to USC ( she is in the honors program at Tulane ), but
she does have a prior school classmate who is a McNair Scholar this year at USC. The
scholarship site lists the monetary benefit as $15,000 plus in state tuition. But I believe
that there was enough in this scholarship fund to cover all costs for the McNair Scholars,
plus provide a laptop, and a stipend for summer travel. To qualify for the McNair and Alumni
Scholarships, you also had to apply to the honors college. The Cooper, McKissick, and Woodrow
Scolarships do not require honors app also.

My younger daughter applied to USC this year. She received her acceptance letter in Dec.,
but is still waiting on reply for honors. The honors letters are to be sent out by Feb. 15th.
I believe Capstone Scholars are notified the beginning of March. My daughter is impatiently
waiting!
