@grigorgn: could you post your daughter's stat?

Accepted with nice financial aid which was not expected. Has anyone been to the campus / what is the student body like? I'm nervous that it is too preppy for me.

Emily4264 - Sorry, but "preppy" is in the eye of the beholder. While there are many adjectives to use in personally describing a school, ultimately, if you haven't even visited, how can you apply a label?

St. Lawrence has offered me the best financial aid package out of all of my schools so far. I'm really disappointed about my latest discovery, that Hamilton College (my sort of # 1), put me on their waiting list. No one on that waiting list will know if they've been accepted until May 1st or later, meaning I have to either wait for Hamilton to accept me through the summer and decline my other schools, or go to St. Lawrence which has been basically tied for #1 all along. I just feel so disappointed. The decision between St. Lawrence and Hamilton would have been really hard and I love St. Lawrence but being rejected in the first round is so hard to deal with! A lot of my friends and family prefer Hamilton, and I think that is what makes me feel like I'm missing out. At this point, my choices are between Hobart and William Smith colleges and St. Lawrence. Does anyone have any advice or personal experience I could learn from? I feel like these college decisions are too much for one 17/18 year old to bear! How can we decide what we want to do for the rest of our lives now when we've barely lived?!

Beyond my depressive ranting I'd love to hear about St. Lawrence. I've heard and seen so many great things about it. :D

My daughter is also deciding between St. Lawrence, HWS but American is also a strong contender. Personally I liked SLU for her and the package was nice. Have you visited HWS? If so what did you think. I thought SLU was friendly and the campus was very nice. Looks like we'll going back to visit next week.

I have visited both schools and I have a close friend at HWS now. She loves it there (She is extremely intelligent and is going to be a surgeon). Personally, I think HWS is too crowded and busy on campus. St. Law was much more rural and spread out which I liked better. The location of HWS is great though. I love the Finger Lakes region! It's beautiful. I'm there all summer when ever I get the chance. I also like St. Lawrence's location though. I mean what else can someone do on campus in the middle of no where besides work? Even though my best friend is choosing to go to HWS, I think I can see that my best choice is St. Lawrence. I'm going to visit this week at some point.

StudentQ3-
Perhaps this might help. Going into the college selection process, my dd always had Hamilton as her number 1 school . She was thrilled to learn she was accepted at Hamilton. She was also accepted at many other fine schools (even an Ivy), including SLU and began the tour of Accepted Student Day" with the various schools.

We excitedly went back to Hamilton several times and she even spoke with the Dean of Students whose own daughter was at SLU. It wasn't an easy decision and it went out to the last possible minute. For many reasons, ultimately, SLU won her over.

Hamilton does a wonderful job promoting its writing program, which was very important to my daughter. However, at SLU, she has found a very strong and persistent writing requirement in all her classes- from art to math and everything in between.

Among many other things, it was the student body (and the amazing facilities) that won her over.

While Hamilton's reputation is well recognized, there are other schools of equal quality that are worth taking seriously, SLU being one.

Jelomom, Have any of your children taken part in the study abroad programs at SLU? My D is interested in the Global Studies program and study abroad. She is currently deciding between SLU, American, Dickinson and HWS. Some are similar and American being the most different. We are going to revisit SLU next week. Any insights would be appreciated.

Hi evriv-
The answer is no.......not yet. My daughter plans to go next Spring, not sure where yet. What I can tell you is that SLU's programs in France, Spain and Kenya have been around for 30+ years. The first two have language requirements and Kenya's program is a first(or very close) for an American school to run a program on the African continent. They have an extremely close relationship within the country and they also support bringing Kenyan students to SLU. London and Denmark do not have a language requirement and are very competitive (Kenya too). There are SLU programs also in China, Japan and Indonesia. I have been told that the students who went to China and Indonesia have tremendous experiences. Oh, that's right there is Australia and Trinidad-Tobago (environmental studies). Two new programs in New Zealand and Thailand are beginning is the fall. My daughter is considering a program that is not run by the University but is within their conference of accepted programs. FYI, SLU also has a semester at American.

My daughter is suppose to speak to the students during the Student break out sessions on the Accepted Students weekends. They want her to speak about a University Fellowship she was award last summer.

Hope some of this helps

Thanks for the help :D

I graduated from SLU 29 years ago (o.O) and my best friend did the year in France. I knew several people who did a semester in Kenya. Both programs are very well established and very well attended. The university did/does a great job of taking care of the students who are studying abroad. It’s a great program and you can be confident as a parent that your students will be well taken care of.
