Decommitting after ED

Just curious, has anyone heard of any athlete withdrawing from ED after applying to pursue athletics at another school?

Before you are accepted ED? If so, yes.

Yes. Why do you ask? Are you planning to do this?

not sure your complete scenario - so
guessing here:

if you applied ed and no relation to
your sport - you can contact admissions and withdraw your ed app.

if you applied ed, had committed to a team/coach at the ed school - please let them know asap if you wish to withdraw the commitment, as your spot MAY open up
another opportunity for a qualified athlete.

S is in a situation because he was given a tight deadline and pressured to commit and ED by coach but is now getting approached by coaches from his dream schools. Not sure if he will decommit but wanted to know if it’s possible.

You can pull the ED app any time before a decision is made. Athletic recruits decommit all the time. But I’d ask your GC at school just in case.

@Mwfan1921 Any thoughts?

Definitely possible. The touchy part is if he wants to maintain coach support at the ED school while exploring these other options. If that’s not a big concern then he can just withdraw the ED app or flip it to RD.

He might be able to use his current ED commitment as leverage to motivate one of his preferred “dream schools” to facilitate admissions to the preferred university. They would know he is making a sacrifice to decommit and he would need some level of assurance that he had something else to commit to.

Some believe the athletic recruiting process gives too much power to coaches/schools, and that the athlete should do what’s best for themselves. (One of my son’s coaches strongly felt this way). (I am neutral!).

If your son gets an offer of full support with admissions from his dream school, then I think he should decommit. But, get the offer, pass the preread if there is one, before decommitting.

Thanks all for the responses. S ended up getting THE offer and is drafting what he will tell the coach now. Will be a tough phone call for sure.
