Deep Springs 2018 Entry

@whereinnj
I think they don’t look for extracurricular in the sense of sports. I cycled to Tibet this year over 2,300 kilometers (1,200 mi ). I could probably safely say I was the first US high schooler to do this but apparently that doesn’t make me any better than the rest.

As for what they look for in the first year of college, I’d warrant a guess that since DS seems to focus on the class liberal tradition, rhetoric, debate, literature, (languages???) and independence. I also think problem solving (if that falls under independence?).

@ilovewhitman Are you here?
@iliketoreadalot so the typical hermit Chinese scholar in exile (THOREAU???) [I’m kidding about the former and disappointed in your lack of community change latter :slight_smile: ].

What schools yall going to this year? Oh another question, do any of you plan to write a book at some stage?

@redlegs1234
Haha yes

I’m here… also rejected! Huzzah! If we have to fail in anything, what an amazing thing to fail in… someone chime in. What is that quote? Fail while daring greatly?

I love this community! So glad we’re all here for each other. If anyone gets in, please share! My deepest congrats to all who even dared to apply!!

If anyone want’s to talk about possibly meeting up, or collaborating in general please contact me via the PM in this account and I’ll add you to a list for email we can all join (we can change whatever method y’all prefer latter). We seem to have quite a bit in common no doubt due to the nature of the school.
@ilovewhitman @oliang66 @redlegs1234 @whereinnj @essemena2000 @Feroxlilium @Empuff and @AlbertaPancake

Y’all seem to be recently active so I’ve tagged y’all with this message.

I won’t be adding anyone tomorrow cause I’m fixin’ to be somewhere but I’ll add you ~19:00 Central time. Anyone else interested can also just PM me :).

Everyone have a great winter break!

@ilovewhitman Not sure what you’re talking about. There is a phrase in Chinese that calls those who do this “have the capability (courage) to do great things”.
Perhaps this is what your were looking for?
“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” - Robert F. Kennedy

@DragonofChangban My goal for college was to write a book actually. Now that I won’t be going to DS, I am strongly considering working on my friend’s sheep farm or on an oil rig, and using the spare time to write a research book with a few sections. The first section was going to explain how art, media, language and cultural/religious subtleties created the Islamic-Western conflict. The second section was going to be about how the same factors as above influence and were influenced by social changes and revolutions within Muslim countries (especially in the Arab Spring and Winter). Then I wanted to finish it with the implications of my findings on further social and political progress between Islam and the West and within Islamic countries so that politicians and influential citizens can act more carefully when engaging in cross-cultural discourse. Obviously I can’t finish this book in a year, but I began my research a few months ago and have begun talking to professors from different schools and writing essays that could appear in the book. Unfortunately, there wasn’t really a space to talk about this in my application.

Same here. Looks like first year of Coed meant a lot more applicants.
“Due to the size of our application pool, we do not have the resources to review your application with you”.
I’d still meet with the people who join this school though.I think we have a larger applicant pool now which causes more applicants. If we go off the baseline of 200 something people when it was male only, I’d guess that’s >400 people this year.

@whereinnj You need some very high academics anyways. I think you need all A’s on AP or IB classes. My first two years screwed me over pretty hard.

@Empuff What part? 你怎么看到 Deep Springs? 国内没有看到这个学校啊。

I saw some transfer students from ivies and stanford in the fb group so maybe they got in?

@DragonofChangban lol sorry I’m drowning in my college apps cuz I’m applying to like 20 schools. I’m from Shandong but I go to school in CT. My mom first told me about the school a couple years ago. When I was doing college search I thought of it and just casually looked at the website. I saw they started admitting women(in my econ class and literally just said omg out loud) and applied.

Which part do you visit when you go to China?

@Empuff Beijing, the countryside.

a female applicant, rejected as well…

@echofrainbow, sorry.

I just found this thread!
@DragonofChangban if the email thread is still active, could you add me?

@DragonofChangban can you add me too please?
