Congrats again to people who got in!! If anyone who made it to the second round is willing to share the prompts, I’d be interested in seeing what they ask. Totally understand if you don’t want to, though.
Heyo,
I said I would have more to say “tomorrow” but I guess I took a bit longer than usual Sorry about that…
Anyway, congratulations to everyone who got in again, and welcome to the thread @altinitials
Did you manage to get any feedback @Rayne_Sheppard ? I know in previous years they weren’t willing to, but maybe this year it’s different?
And these are the prompts for the second round @_bospad
- Write a short story. (100 words)
- Identify a virtue that can be readily misunderstood and argue on behalf of a better understanding. (350 words)
- What is worth paying attention to? (400 words)
- At Deep Springs, we are often asked to do dicult and personally uncomfortable things. We may not want to do any one of these things in particular. What is the value of discomfort in education? What are its limits? (500 words)
- Solve a Problem (750 words)
Question for consideration and feedback…
Would a kid who doesn’t read much for pleasure fit in a school like this? That book list prompt makes me think not. Eager to hear thoughts.
Hi yatuzo,
I guess, maybe? I think reading for pleasure correlates strongly with a lot of skills that would be helpful at DS, but I doubt that having a smaller reading list makes you a bad fit. After all, DS isn’t solely academically driven and personally, I feel that you can learn as much from a book as you can from watching television. I mean, most of my moral values stem from anime XD
Was just thinking about this forum and my application process a few months ago. Did anyone here get in? And for those who didn’t, where are you going to be this fall? It was fun applying, even if I didn’t get the result I hoped for. Super huge congrats to the people who did get in, though!
headed to pomona college
very nice! i’m going to rice university myself
Hi guys! My name is Sophie. I’m a Pomona freshman (rising sophomore), and I, like many of you, applied to Deep Springs this year and, probably also like many of you, got rejected. …But I have a proposal! I’m planning to take a gap year next year to get away from a more conventional style of learning and hopefully work and travel, and it occurred to me that if what you guys want is much like what I want– responsibility, community, and intense academic engagement– we literally have everything we need right here. If anyone would be interested, I would love to jointly organize a year where we could all live and work together trying to support ourselves and engage in intensive learning. We could even travel (do some work on farms abroad or something). I know this is kind of out of nowhere, but if you’re interested, email me at starbuck3665@gmail.com and maybe we can talk about it and zoom or something.
Also just realized you can also just dm me.
